Drive cr-r burn speed.

High guys after some research im under the conclusion that burning speed matters, the brand of cd matters, and the drive. I thought it might be an idea for the guys that are burning red books everyday succesfully to let us know what configuration they use, ie Drive-cdr-speed.
Also is there software you can get to determine this for your drive and cd configuration.

Hey doogle, I just posted in your other thread so check that one out also because I kind of touched on this there too. Now, I'm sure that the mastering guys will know a bit more about this than me but, without my notes on redbook handy I still have a small reccomendation.

1X is the IDEAL writing speed for your drive. I prefer Plextor brand CDRW drives myself and many others also swear by them. TDK media is popular in the industry as well as Maxell. The better the CDR quality the better the burn quality will be. Make sure to steer clear of CDR media that lacks a laquer protective coating on the back which leaves the metal coating vulnerable. Most CDRW drive manufacturers reccomend that you configure them as Master devices on an IDE controller.
I personally bought an SATA DVDR drive but have no way to compare it to an IDE equivalent so I can't comment on the benifits/disadvantages of SATA drives. Sorry.

I hope that this covers a few of your concerns and Welcome to the Forum! Hopefully the mastering Gurus will follow up on this one with some good info.
 
Stick only with brands of CD-R media recommended by your burner manufacturer and stick only with media rated at your drive's maximum burn speed. With that combo, you shouldn't have to wait around for 1x burnings; that's a little bit of conservative overkill for most quality drives these days.

Quality burn speed depends completly on the quality of drive and media. I have very little problem hitting Redbook at max speed on my TDK VeloCD burners with Maxell or TDK CD-Rs. However not all burners and hardware configs provide this amount of performance.

A good rule of thimb espoused by one of the mastering engineers on this forum (and it sounds good to me too) is to burn no greater than 1/3rd the max burn speed of your drive. In other words if you have a drive that can burn at up to 24x, burn your pre-masters at 8x or less.

My tests found a "burning efficiency zone" at around 20% of a drive's top speed. 8-12X on a 52X drive or so...

Plextor Premium drives won hands down... Tayio Yuden, Memorex, Sony and Verbatim discs were all in the pocket.
