The truth is out there!
this song has been in my head for days.

i haven't had any time to record in a while, so i thought i'd just knock out a cool cover today.

nothing too serious...let me know what you think, what's cool and what sucks.

thanks.

slightly remixed version

ok, after listening to this again, the bass is pretty out of control. i'll bring that down some later.

I feel like the bass is stepping all over the guitars and vocals, so I'll work on the low end.

There's also a weird thing going on with the vocals because I have a super wet reverby one that I forgot to mute...haha!

Whoa. This was not what I expected. The last tune I remember hearing of yours was mellower and I think Jerry G comparisons were even drawn (even though I remember you weren't a fan :)). This is quite different!

It seemed like your voice was straining a bit on this maybe? I don't know the original, so forgive my ignorance if I'm way off base.

I think the drums are kinda tame sounding for an uptempo number like this. Can you get them to pop more? The snare seems really mellow. The bass could be more clearly defined here and/or louder. I was losing track of it myself. Guitars sounded pretty good. Maybe I should look up the original?

I don't mind Jerry Garcia :) I just haven't listened to much of the dead before. Yeah most of my stuff is mellower, but I love old punk rock. More mellow stuff to come once I get some time to really sit down and write and arrange then record. This was just to kill some time and have some fun yesterday.

I beefed up the drums some, and worked on the bass. I've reposted the reworked version in the original post. This was just slapped together, so it's not perfect, and my voice is a mess this week but hopefully this one is better.

I think the vox need to be belted out a little more, they sound too soft and lack the energy I think it needs. Pitch is fine, I just think they sound weak. I also think I'm hearing a little sibilance in there, just a little teeny bit. The drums in the very intro, before all the bass kicks in, sound kinda basketball-ish. It's less noticeable when all the instruments are going. I think what heatmiser is saying about the drums is that they sound kinda far back. They're played well, I'd work on the mix. Bring em forward. They aren't bad, but they're not great either. I think a little eq tweaking could fix that right up. Guitars sound good. I love the song, it's pretty good overall.

cool thanks. i don't think i'm gonna do anything more to this song because it was just for fun, but i'll definitely use the tips for other stuff. I brought the drums up in the mix here at home and it does sound way better. I also compressed the hell out of the snare and got it cracking more...i think it sounds better for this kind of music.

Thanks for listening, I appreciate the tips.

my voice is pretty weak and mellow most of the time...this song is kinda high for me and i'm not a loud rock n' roll singer. i wish i could belt it out more. I usually do mellower stuff, so loud drums aren't my specialty...I'll work on that.
