I double tracked the vox, then edited the second track so it comes in only on certain phrases, but when it comes in, it pulls both voices to the back of the mix making them sound soft and distant. How can I fix this?

I was just going to say that it almost sounds like you have the vocals bussed with a compressor on them. If you do that, depending on your comp settings, the second voice could be too loud which drives the comp and forces both voices down together
