Double micing?

What are some of the desired methods of double micing for guitar amps and vocals?

I'm using an AT3043 and a 57 (or a 58). Sould the 57 be at the amp with the AT as a room mic?

Does anybody run guitar direct in from FX box and still mic the amp signal?

Are there any cool effects or advantages to doubling up on vocals?

what i like to do when i really want some different guitar tones to play with (but am usually to lazy to do) is to run the SPDIF out of my Johnson J-Station into the spdif of my audiophile in stereo.....then i go from one of the analog outs of the J-Station into one of the channels of this old Kustom tube amp i have...close mic it with the sm57....about 3-5 feet back with the Marshall v67.....if i had more soundcard inputs id run the second analog out into the second channel of the amp, set up with a different sound, and mic it the same way.....might be a phase nightmare....but i could put the 2 separate speakers (2x12's) in 2 different rooms to help out......

Double Micing

Keep it simple, 57 Right at the speaker, then use the AT mic 3ft in-front of the mic, then if your gfeeling enerous record another track with the AT mic 3ft behind the amp.

about Vocals, doubling them up can have it`s good and bad points. if your doubling it up, the second track wont be exactly the same so with a bit of panning and a slightly different eq (so it doesn`t take up exactly the same frequencies) you can achieve a much fuller sound vocal-wise, but, sometimes it can make it sound alot rougher than you would want.

try it, you can always delete the second track if you`re not happy.

im not a fan of actually perferming a doublet track on vocals....ill copy and delay but unless you can almost nail a vocal exact, to me it sounds crappy....on guitar you can have subtle differences and even play different parts and all that and it can come out cool....

Here's something similar ...

57 2-inches from grill cloth of a small epiphone bass amp (bear with me here) aimed about 1 inch from outside edge of cone, then a V67 three feet back aimed dead centre at the cone. Blend mics 50/50, stir gently and serve over ice . . .

Git was a Danelectro DC-59 into an Aardvark Pro 2496. No compression, just a touch of verb (Anwidasoft Plug-in)

The 57 brings out the meat of this amp (good cause the Dano normally sounds thin and twangy) the v67 picks up the overall sound of the amp cleanly and smoothly.
