Check this and tell me what you fellas (or ladies) think.

pick the song - don't fake the funk
it's pretty long so don't waste your time listening to the whole thing- we were just going freestyle. I think I have it mixed decent- sometimes the bass is a little too heavy but I think it might be his amp?? he's running out of the premp to the 4 track.
by the way we used:
3 sm57's on my drums to a peavey rq200 mixer
line from bass amp preamp
line after guitar pedal
all to a tascam 414 mkII
all in my garage that isn't soundproofed at all!

Yeah, I think the mix sounds pretty good, too. I'm curious though - why 3 mics on the drums and none on amps? Where was the third mic positioned, anyway?
 
Thanks Vurt..The main reason is that I only have 3 mics- that brings up a good question-I'm obviously new to this, but would it sound better/different if we put mics in front of their amps instead of going straight to the 4-track? Another reason we do it like that is to eliminate any drum sound from their tracks but I don't know if that would happen anyways.
 
You'll get a MUCH better sound if you mic the guitar amp vs. running it directly into the 4trk (bass is okay to run direct, though). Experiment with a 57/amp at different angles and positions. Put the mic all the way up against the amp.

Depending on how loud you guys are, the mics you're using aren't going to pick up so much of everything to ruin the recording (assuming you're not anal retentive).

My recording situation is much the same as yours, and I record live all the time, often with 2 condenser mics too(much more sensitive than dynamics=57). Sometimes it sounds like shit, sometimes it doesn't - depends on the song, volume, mic position. After a while you'll know what you can get away with, depending on what kind of sound you're after.

From what I heard, I think you'll be happier micing the guitar amp and letting it rip. You might lose some drums using two mics instead of three, but they should still be okay. You may want to look into an additional mic. That way you can either record the guitar in stereo (2 mics), or add it as a third on the drums

By the way, NO it does not suck...

You could probably get rid of that analog hiss with some software, before you turn the tune into an mp3....something maybe free, like the Cool Edit demo, if it's still available...use the noise reduction thing and that hiss will take a hike.......good advice from Vurt, by the way.....gibs
 
It's got a nice sound to it. Good mix. I would turn up the treble on the bass (in the performance, that is -- it should have that more prominent character), and the guitar should be funkier; more rhythmic accents.
 
Thanks a lot fellas- what kind of mp3 encoder do ya'll reccomend- I'm using bladeenc because I found it for free....
