For a PA system?

  • 1 D112
  • 4 SM57s
  • 8 SM58s

In case you're wondering it's the mic collection of The Charlotte here in Leicester.

It seems kind of One Dimensional to me. If I remember correctly the guy who runs the In House Sound System there uses the D112 on bands' kick drums and the four SM57s on snares and amps. Which leaves only the 58s for everything else (vox, toms and overheads (and he does close mic the toms. I've seen it) etc). Surely a couple of condensers couldn't hurt  It's not like there aren't any that can withstand the rigours of live work (the AKG C535B springs to mind).

I'd definately use condensers with that lot, but it depends on what and who.

Check out the Beyer Opus range. I use them live often.

For live vocals I also like the Sennheiser 835S ... usually better than the SM58s, actually. They seem to have more presence and work better for my voice and for others in the band I was in. Maybe because we weren't strong singers? Anyway, GC sells them in 3 packs, or did. They might be worth checking out.

What the heck is "The Charlotte"?

If its strictly for live performance, its probably fine.
All of those mikes are pretty bullet proof; a necessary evil for the rigors of the road.

But if this is a studio's collection, I'd say they need to put some money in their locker.

Tis this.

Add some MD421's.

what would you guys recommend for live overheads? i could see that collection working for almost everything except the overheads (and maybe the bass cab).

Yes, for PA systems where you have no idea who will be handling them or how (actually you do have an idea, but it is not a pretty one) then those rock-solid shures are the standard.
