does it make sense to use an expander right after a compressor? like say if my threshold for my compressor was -7 wit a ratio of 3 and then i set the expander's threshold to -10 with a ratio to make the volume increase whenever it hits -10 this way i can keep the volume between -7 and -10 without ever reaching another number other than between those 2 numbers. does this make sense to do and has anyone ever tried anything like this before or have any better way of doing this? thanks for any feedback given

Take a look at the Neodynium plug demo from Elemental Audio.

man there's so many compressor plugins that i don't know about. i usually just use waves

There's a fairly steep learning curve to Neodynium; not just on how it works (though there is that), but when and why to use it. Personally I don't find a whole lot of reason to pull it out of the tool kit very often, but it's one of those specialty tools that when it is needed, it works. And it fits the description of what you describe in one box.
