Does this intro make any sense?

The intro definitely 'makes sense' the piano sounds good (real) and is well played. What makes less sense is what sounds like a creaky piano stool sampled and treated with echo.
The song builds nicely when the drums come in and piano, vocal and drums well seperated in the mix. The drums sound good and real and yes as you suggest sit slightly too loud in the mix. The voice needs to be very much centre stage in this song.
Well performed apart from one vocal blip at 2.30 where the vocal goes into a different key but returns on the next note.
The song builds well towards the end and the od guitar works well.
An arrangement suggestion would be to use an instrument such as a cello to counter melody the vocal, before the build up at the end. The song has a sense of poignancy that I think would be augmented by this.
Good Job and good luck finishing off the mix.

Yeah, the "piano stool" sound is what I am questioning. It's actually the drums that have been run thru the ringer. I think the idea is there, but the execution is lacking.

During the intro the piano sounds good. But the drum sound isn't working there. The artificiality of it doesn't fit the song's feel.

An acoustic guitar playing a simple fingerpicked arpeggio during the first half of each bar of the intro would work better. Or some hand percussion maybe. Something natural but sparse.

Beyond that song sounds really good overall, and I enjoyed listening. :)

Sounds better in the intro without the drums but sounds a little empty and inconsistent. Try putting a quiet acoustic guitar behind the piano with the guitar doing a rising arpeggio on the first four eighth notes of each bar.
