all I'm saying is, "playing" a sample is no different to playing an instrument - when you play a G, are you not playing the same G a million people have lpayed before - no, it all depends on context, rhythm, feel and emotion - in the same way, the way a DJ or similar artist mixes a track changes the original material they are working with. you can't narrow the term "musicians" down to people who play "real" instruments - mixers, samplers and computers are instruments in themselves and the people who play them just as valid as "real" artists.

a violinist reproduces an orchestral piece note for note with all the correct intonation and emotion as written in the piece, which was written a thousand years ago. At the same time DJ Dange Mouse takes a Beatles sample, cuts it, dices it and puts it in a new context under another sample from Jay-Z. who of the two is the more creative?

snip:

OK lemme stand on that point... first .. that playing a sample is NOT like playing an instrument.... with an instrument you have to LEARN how to play it...... learn chords ... notes.. fingering... etc etc etc.. which is showing skill and effort. But when playing a sample.. you just RIP the sample from someone elses work... patch it into a keyboard or a computer and push a button to play it! There is NO real skill involved. Hence showing no real talent!

now as you say an orchestra playing someone elses peice compared to a dj jamming on sample he ripped from such and such... you saying that a so called dj is the one that is showing talent... but lemme say that . i disagree.. cause the orchestra is NOT writing this material from scratch.. they are only allowing the LISTENERS HOW the original artist meant it to be played. As for the DJ... if you ask me , they are NOT.. ripping it up and slicing it in here and there.. is not showing how the original artists meant it to be.. and hence thats where Stealing form the artists comes in!.

I was talking about ORIGINAL music.. when i said musicians giving birth to a song... People who write ths stuff from scratch!.. thats all!!! i know this is getting off topic now.. so i will drop it.. but i just wanted to say that i disagree with you Nick !! But as you say we are all entitled to our opinions! ;)

Sorry to sound like an asshole,...........

Yee haw: flame away!

OK...
Flame on.............

I write music.
I write lyrics.
I play instruments.
I am a songwriter.
I spend a lot of time practicing and playing instruments in the creation of my music.
Without me the instrument is useless....it needs my guidance to sound out...
I need the skill set required to make it sound out.

Sampling is taking a sound that has already been created by a musician.
A person who also has practiced and honed their skills in order to create the sound.
Sampling without permission is stealing someone's work....their skills...their time and effort.
ACID is copyright free samples.
That means that the artist/writers have already been paid for their work and allow the ACID user to utilize the sounds as they please.
To me...this is the only acceptable form of sampling.
If you record beats off of a keyboard or soft-synth....you have paid for the soundfont....and again...the creator has been compensated.
When you just take pieces of tunes without permission and throw them together in a mix without acquiring a liscense to do so and add a vocal on top (or not) then you are a thief.

end of rant

agreed. so DJ Danger Mouse was probably a bad example (it was just the ifrst that popped to mind as he has been in the media lately). the creator of the original music should always be credited and compensated for the sound.

however, the suggestion that a DJ doesn't have to LEARN or PRATICE to play their instrument gets up my nose. In the same way that I practice scales and chord progressions, a DJ hones their skillset - it's just a DIFFERENT KIND OF SKILLS. anyways, I don't wanna start any fist-fights :p , but I mean hey, this a forum for discussion and debate so it's all good.

for the record, I play guitar and a little piano and sing, and I am completely bewildered by almost all sampling software/hardware :o - hence the respect for those that can use it to good effect :)

repsect to DogRox though - you have an opinion and you stick to it - great things are often acheieved that way :D
