All the advice you have received in this thread is great.

But you must remember... And I quote...

post script. Good luck on your endeavour for the perfect sound. :)

One technique not suggested so far is to change the chord structure for the other layers, i.e. use a different chord shape maybe further up the neck. That gives a much fatter sound than just a straight copy.

also try using heavier strings set higher. You'll never get a big fat sound using light strings set low.

This is just my spin on it all.

Ive not even made my first recording as yet so iam no expert at all to advise here.

What i do know is if you cut corners on anything you do its going to cost you somewhere down the line

I Have approached what iam doing from a point of asking alot of questions and although sometimes the questions i ask may be obvious to some id rather ask in here and research right now then get it all wrong on someonelses recording later on.

I too when i first came in here had thoughts of much the same achieving it all sounding a certain way but i soon realised after doing some research i still had some way to travel before i was going to even realise anything remotely close to what i wanted to hear.

I believe good work achieved in the studio is about alot of of things its like fine wine or good food its a balance like getting all to work in harmony like a fine swiss watch

Get your rooms built right for the sound you want to achieve dont skimp on things you really need(being pennywise and pound foolish) have a well thought out plan for what you really want to do when you have this all in place and realise what your costs will be work about getting your budget happening for your project without a plan the sounds in your head will always remain a dream

I myself am in a slow gradual buildup mode i know i wont have the rooms tomorrow nor will i have all the equipment so each purchase i make will be an important one and if i can make a few recordings at home of myself in which i can use to practice with then that will be half the fun of learning

Hell i may even learn something along the way which will assist me later when i have achieved my dream

the titanic may not fit in your bathtub but with some time and patience and a some knowledge to boot you will get your boat out to sea

Try doing a couple of tracks slightly detuned...a drop flat. Just a hair, not halfway dwn to the next key. If your A is 440Hz, make it 437.5 Hz.

Thanks for all the advice I've recieved here. I've heard most of the suggestions more than a few times (you need this soundcard, that mic, etc.) but I personally think it has alot to do with the arrangements and the physical performance than with equipment. Understandably you need some decent equipment to capture the sound but in order to make a great recording you need something great to record in the first place. I mean, you can layer a guitar track over and over with the same thing but that isn't going to bring the track to life. There has got to be some different arrangements and other stuff to add texture. I really like the idea to downtune slightly and use alternate chord structures. One thing I'm going to try is to do some alternate tunings as well... Thanks folks.

B A L A N C E TO WEIGH UP ALL buy what you really need

now to get the job done but if you can hold of spending the cash you will usually find a better deal if you hold the money you have maybe double it then go in and talk a hard deal with cash in hand at around sales time when all the big music sales are on keep asking questions but also let your ears tell you what is best for you after all you will be working with what you buy and maybe even for quite a while before you can upgrade again

less is more sometimes but more sometimes means holding off what you want for now untill the picture is in total view

sorry guys it was late when that post went in

what i was trying to say was

b a l a n c e

in anything is important too many times we all want to achieve the great sounds we hear on our records and cd,s and think by just slapping things together reading a few books and then going for broke it all happens

what i think is required is a more balanced approach if something works it works for a reason its been tried and tested and thats not to say there aint no other way something can be achieved.

But if people think they can just fast track every corner and still achieve perfection maybe they need to stop and reflect a little more nothing essp audio perfection happens on 0% budget its all time patience money and most of all enviroment and know how

I am just a beginner myself but the above i have come to realise is the truth
