such as, chorus, reverb, or double delay? When I try to run one of the demos it says various plugins are not installed. Also can't find them when trying to add a send effect to a track.

I don't know about the demo version (I would guess no effects), but yes, the full licensed version comes with several very usable plugins (maybe about 15-20 of the most comm effects). I use the dynamics (compression/limiter/noise gate) plug quite a bit, as well as "Da Tube" distortion. I've also downloaded a ton of free VST plugs that often come in handy.

I think SE is a pretty neat piece of software. It does everything I need for a reasonable price ($75). I can't imagine needing to move up to SX anytime in the near future.

This is a licensed version, I'm trying to run a demo from the Cubase cd. I've searched the cd and can't find any folder with plugins. Did just one cd come in your box? I did not get any errors during the installation, and it did not ask for another cd. Hmmm.

Plug ins probably not included on the demo, whcih may not have full vst support. When you install the full version of SE it installs the included plug ins automatically.

Actually I don't really like any of the included ones in SE - TimOBrien's link is excellent.

There is only one CD. When you install the software on your system, the plugins are placed in "Program files-->Steinberg-->Cubase SE-->VSTPlugins." At least that's how it looks on my system. You might retry a clean install of the complete version. Otherwise, you may have a faulty version of the software and need to return it to Steinberg for replacement under warranty.

I'm running this software on a Mac so the paths are a little different. I checked the plugins folder and it is empty. I've also tried reinstalling with no luck, guess I'll have to give them a support call.

Are these effects even worth the trouble or should I just search for freebies? I'm also a little scared that something else may be amiss once I get a little deeper into the workings of Cubase. If the plugins are not installing maybe something else is missing as well.

The included ones are fine, but you could probably get equal or better plugs for free. I get a lot of mileage out of the Digital Fishphones plugs and the Classic Series plugs. The SIR convolution reverb is also excellent if you have a fast enough computer to use it. I'm not sure which ones are available for mac. Check:

Thanks a bunch for all the links guys.

I've also noticed that the installation menu only has easy install when it should have three options. (Missing the custom and uninstall options.) I guess that I need to get this copy replaced.

Looks like I'll be on hold for awhile.

Thinking about it of all the bundled vst's with SE I think I only use the gate on the dynamics plug-in.

Scrubs is right on the money with those links for the digital fishphones and Kjaerhus plugs.

Cubase SX plugs

hey scrubs, i see you mentioned downloading some extra VST plugs. i was wondering where that was? as im using Cubase SX and was wanting to add plug ins to what came with SX.

thanks,

NUna!

Better

Thanks for the links scrubs including your links. I liked better better :)

Just considering moving back to Cubase at some point soon ... how does everyone find SE? I ditched VST 5.0 for Tracktion because I wanted to go legal and Tracktion is a lot of fun ... but I'm being paid for some recording time in the summer and no-one is going to want to use Tracktion. So what are the major missing parts in SE? What's the MIDI / soft-sampling support like? (Tracktion has all a sampler built in) Are there any major limits other than the 48 track count?

Well, noisedude, if you scroll down on this pdf you'll see the comparison chart. Cubase Comparison

I don't do much MIDI, but I know it is supported in SE. I've used the built-in MIDI drums a few times. They work fine, but the sounds are silly.

48 tracks are plenty for me, so I don't have a problem with that aspect. Though I don't see why it costs so much more to get unlimited tracks, when the hardware is really the limiting factor.

There are fewer effect sends & inserts per channel than the big versions, I think. SE has plenty for my needs. If I need more than 17 effects on a song (5 inserts, 8 sends, 4 master effects), I did something wrong during tracking.

I don't know how much respect you'll garner with SE, but I guess it's a step-up from Tracktion. I suppose I wouldn't tell clients which version, just that you're using Cubase. Seems alot of stateside clients want ProTools or nothing, but that doesn't affect me, because I don't record others.

You can always upgrade to the next level with Steinberg's trade-in policy, so there's no loss in trying out the less-expensive version first, I suppose. Good luck.

Cheers Scrubs! I'm not fussed about respect - these guys are paying for use of my gear in my house, with me on hand when I'm free to help with what I can. But they aren't going to want to spend the first week learning Tracktion, and everyone kinda knows Cubase at some level. I should point out that they're only paying me a nominal 'thank you', because it's just some friends who want to try out putting together arrangements of some of their songs.

Tracktion does what I want but it's obviously quite a young product, with a long way to go before it even begins to think about being used in 'commercial' settings.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I found the plugins. All I had to do was go to the Cubase program icon in the applications folder and ctrl+click and then choose 'Show Package Contents'. Copied the vst's and put them in their proper place, now everything is working as it should be.

Also, I tried the installation on a Pc and the install worked like a charm. For now I'm going to stay with the Mac since it's a dual processor. :)
