does cubase LE suck?

ok so i have an iMac G5 and a FIREPOD that came with cubase LE
i have 512MB or RAM on here and an 80GB HD and the fastest CPU they make for these things! ok now here is my beef i want to run 24 9600 on here and record in cubase so i set everything for that bit depth i record the track..
hmmm sounds good i play it back. hmmm still sounds good third time CRACKLE SNAP POP DROPOUT! CLICK CLICK CLICK! no VST being used at all the meter is showing that the load is very light not even a light green color. so i set some buffer changes thinking that would fix it EVEN WORSE! ok now i would think that cubase would be better than this i mean for crying out loud its cubase it suposed to be good! but this sucks and i am out of ideas on how to make this work. i need some good software to record my first CD. and right now the best thing i have is garage band 2.0.1 which is not that great! HELP WHAT DO I DO? i know its not my computer this thing handles it well enough and the FIREPOD works great. do i really have to spend $300 and get some software that works?
help me out here guys i am at my wits end.

PS. i also tested using 16 4100 and it still did this to me.

Pops and crackles tend to be CPU & buffer issues, and would likely be present regardless of the software. I know very little about macs, so I couldn't begin to tell you how to clean up any other running background processes, but that would be something to look into (virus software, etc.). Also, the number and CPU load of effects/VST instruments will affect performance. If you had Cubase SX, you'd be able to run oodles more effects per channel, which would probably worsen the problem rather than improving it, imo.

i already thought of this and have every program turned off in this computer with no effects and everything sut off its still crackling and stuff my cpu should be fine and the meter is not turning red while i watch it. i am not sure what it is.. this thing is buging the crap out of me!

well, I have a 2.4 ghz PC with Cubase SX 2 (ahhhh, SX3 coming in the mail in a couple days!!!) and with the firepod everything works like a dream. I know you have more than enough to run it, just make sure your firepod is set with drivers and consult the presonus forum... I think you have to go into the firepod console too and set the master sample rate (default is 44.1, but it goes to 96). If the master clocks aren't synced you will be snap, crackle, pop city...

lower the firepod setting to medium, if you have it on high. that's what fixed my crackles with the firepod & le.

I'm running LE on my laptop with a Firebox and I was also having snap crackle pop issues but mostly just dropouts. I discovered that if I switched off the built in wireless it went away and I have no problems.

you should have a firepod control panel somewhere.

Guitar Junkie, I think you have to go into the Finder/Utilities/Audio Midi program. In the Audio Midi program I believe this is where you can make changes to the sample rate, etc. for the Firepod. Hope that helps?

Question for you...

Just trying to understand because I had a friend of mine using Cubase LE and he's having similar issues...

When you playback the track one time it's fine, then you try it again and it has problems or is it when recording seperate tracks and some come out fine and some have this same issue?

My buddy says he records some tracks and if he shuts down the program and goes back in they playback with all kinds of cracking and stuff, but if he reboots and plays the tracks back everything is cool.

Sorry I know you're looking for answers and I am firing off more questions but I'd like to figure out what's going on too...lol!

I noticed with my US122 and LE that sometimes using another USB device while the US122 is running causes pops. I used a flashdisk(usb) to load a few plugins. When they had installed I removed the disk then launched cubase. I had pops. After I rebooted all was fine. Don't know if this helps or not.

hey guys i have been away for a while and i see that you have all had something to say. well i have not had that great of luck with this thing and i know its not the FIREPOD..... the best software i have right now is Garage Band so i need to do better than that. its looking like i will grab a copy of Tracktion 2 pretty soon. the demo seems really nice and runs good and clean. ok guys thanks.

and just for the record i do "think" that Cubase LE SUCKS!

So, if you're interested in solving the problem - and most of us will tell you it's not Cubase - then take a moment to think about and understand things.

For one thing, you probably don't need to be running a 96KHz sampling rate. Does the problem go away if you run at 48 or 44.1? If so, keep it there. You probably don't have the gear nor the ears to notice the difference.

Are the clocks synchronized? I once had a crackling problem that was caused by my inadvertenly changing the sync source from "internal" to "external" in the TASCAM control software. I finally noticed that the "Clock" light was blinking on the console, which indicates that the audio interface (FirePod in your case, TASCAM in mine) was not properly sync'd with the computer.

Check your settings, read your manuals, etc. Also, the friendly people over at the Cubase forums might have some suggestions.

you make a few good points but...
ok the reason why i run the 24 96Khz is for mastering reasons (have you read Bob Katz's book?) i also have not had any problems with the recordings untill i play them back for three or four rounds... even if i do not touch them with effects or EQ but only play them back its like the audio just drops out worse and worse my FIREPOD is well synchronized and works fine in other software... hmmm oh and also half the time the Cubase forum seems to be down any way. oh well i have been running with Garage Band and i am looking at open source stuff as well as Mackie Tracktion. Cubase seems to be very nice software if you want to pay a large amount of money for it but i am not very happy with the stuff that it has in LE. Mackie Tracktion 2 comes with $500 worth of VST plugins but i have played around with some stuff in cubase and maybe this fixed the problems maybe not. but for ease of use and less cost as well as more bang for the money in the first place i really like the looks of Tracktion 2.
