Does anyone know where I can find articles specifically about subtractive EQ?

The idea behind subtractive EQ, or "cut instead of boost", is something I've overlooked in my 2 1/2 years of home recording. I'm interested in learning about this important skill. Can anyone post links and/or advice specifically on subtractive EQ? By doing this, other people around here can learn about it too.

I would say there are two general techniques that I use:

1.) Identify problem areas in the recording such as harsh mids, humming, rattles, and zap those frequencies using either narrow notches or gentle, but wide dips.

2.) Identify frequency spectrums that are obscuring other instruments. A good candidate is around 3khz on electric guitar--which often hides snare and vocals. Take the guitar down a few db's and all of a sudden the vocals and snare sit where they should (usually).

Always ask yourself: "What's *right* about this?". It's way too easy to find out what's wrong and start playing with it.
