Fast foward to 4:30- (synth comes on at 4:46). Please let me know I love that sound! I was thinking about buying a Yamaha sy77 and making my own sound...
Now admit it, you only posted this so I would listen to Paul Young, god it's awful stuff, do people really spend hard earned cash on this dribble.
Now that's off my chest: The pad synth string sound you are after can be found on lots of keyboards, however in my years playing bass in an electronic dance act we all become big fans of Korg Keys, have a look around for a secondhand M1, or if thats too much an X5D, if you want a new keyboard the X50 will be selling quite cheap now as it's been out a while. You do sometimes have to do a bit of programming to get the actual texture right but the basic sounds are right there. Also if you want a bit of a synth sounding keys grab a secondhand micro Korg, just used our old one on a client's rock song last week as a double up for the guitar riff.
I was thinking it could be a prophet 5... I love that atmosphere sound you can have... Anyways, about the song. Its not bad, Its pretty catchy and I think its awesome. A lot better than the crap music of today And plus my gf left on vacation for two weeks so I miss her.
Sounds like a DX-7...or any of the DX series pads.
I have one here,..and the pads on it sound similar to the sound you're referring to.
DX7's were used heavily during that time era also.
