does anyone know if there is such a thing as a vocal extractor

does anyone know if there is such a thing as a vocal extractor? i was wondering because i wanted to use a vocal sample of a song, but the instruments get in the way. does it exist, or is it a figment of my imagination.

There is a vocal remover which removes everything mono in the middle of a stereo mix. That is normally the vocal, but usually also the bass.

I tried using a couple of these some time ago. Can't rember which. At least one of these vocal removers could adjust the degree of removal. And I think it could be reversed too, but I am not sure. If you do this, you will, of course, get vocal and bass, not pure vocal!
