Hello,

I am one week away from buying the Digidesign Digi001. Can anyone share their good and bad experiences with it in PC format?
My setup so far:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1.6 Overclocked at 1.9 and kept cool.
Mother Board: Epox EP-4SDA+, SiS645 Chipset, 400 Front Side Bus
RAM:DDR256
Hard Drive: Western Digital WD800 7200 RPM 80Gig
Generic CDR: 52X
CDRW: Plexwriter 40-12-40a

Your insight would be most helpfull
Thanks. Xochi

i won't ever buy that thing, but if it meets your needs,, go for it. what are you trying to do? most folks buy the digi thing because they are somehow enamored of the pro tools software, or vice versa, whichever comes first.

Well, there you go. J has just given you the common textbook Homerecording.com BBS answer..."i won't ever buy that thing"

Yes, some of us have and use it. But why should i tell you how great it is for me.

Much easier to say... Delta 1010 and Sonar.

There. Wow, I feel like one of the gang now.

Later,
C

More research

I was all set on a Dig001 setup. I had downloaded the free PT version and spent a couple of months learning it, but...

After digging deeper, mostly on this board, I ended up with a Delta 1010 and Logic Audio. The sound quality of the Midiman stuff is really outstanding...

One question to you PT guys: Are you running PCs or Macs?

In other words, did digidesign ever get their shit together with the PC version of their software?

That's a good question. .. And the issue is not about how much one likes or despises digidesign.

The M-Box looks like a nice little toy...I might check it out when they get good WDM or ASIO, heck I'd take MME or Direct Sound.

I use the 001 on both a PC and a Mac.

Without starting a pc vs Mac war, since that has been done to death, I will say *I* prefer it on the Mac. Just a touch more stable and not as many configuration issues.

BUT, if you have a machine that is setup correctly, it works beautifully on the PC as well.

My PC based PT LE runs flawlessly....

Digidesign is also claiming Windows XP support is on its way. Based on their track record though, it would seem like XP support should be here sometime in the next 10 - 15 years. Anyway, if they get it working on XP, that should alleviate a lot of the difficulty in setting up a stable Pro Tools install on a PC.

~Wow~
since they've only been a company for 15 years, that would mean that Windows 98 support must have been started way back in 1985-1990!

</sarcasm>

Sorry, I forgot the sarcasm tags. I didn't think they'd be needed, but you never can tell. Anyway, how long has it taken to get NT support?

Actually, Pro Tools TDM was supported on Windows NT back in 1998 or 1999. XP support is lagging, as is OS X support. But I don't think it's going to take 10-15 years.

That's what I thought too, but I couldn't find any info about it on Digi's site. Personally, I'd rather use NT4 than Win98. Any reason why they dropped it?

the ad/da dont stack up to the delta stuff regardless of that guys post trying to be funny.. its just a fact.. though the fact that your using gives you some compatibility with real pro tools rigs.. so you can record at home and take to a studio easily.. though i can do that with logic too.. and also take it to a pro tools facility with not much more time put into it as pro tools le.. so the real question is what do you need? what are you going to do with it? audio.. midi... audio/midi.. personally i will avoid pro tools and there gear until i have enough money for the real version.. the digi 001 is a cunt on any os but mac... it wants to take over.. this must be the draw back of multi tasking computers i suppose.. but it hates pentiums as much as athlons from what ive seen.. (let the onslaught of happy customers ensue..)

if u don't have the extra 2000-5000 dollars to get mytek, apogee etc converters there's no point cuz u can attain similar results w/ the many other computer apps for a cheaper price

At this point the only reason I wouldn't reccomend the 001 is that for its price it is starting to show it's age a bit.

Really only if you need built in preamps...

I think PT was going to come out with Digi002 or something pretty soon....I'm considering going that route when they do...to get a feel for PT.

I am a PT whore...but have decided against the big rig for now.

Speaking of PT - this is just a question i often have. In a way, they have a monopoly in big studios...becuase of their control surfaces...overall presentation...and of course sound quality.

A lot of other options can get close and good results in sound quality...but, there is no other company you can go to for the fully automated/controllable etc...AND they can do that while rightfully claiming superior sound.

My question is - when will someone else step in.

I find it hard to believe that 10 years...or....even 5 years from now...PT will still be the undisputed heavyweight in big studios. Yes...they have the compatibiliy advantage heavily..since so many people use them.

But, the software *could* be better...etc. Will anyone else ever step in? What Logic is doing with the LogicControl is a good attempt in the low end home range I think....But I don't see ANYONE else thinking about taking on PT head to head.

Only other option is getting a huge digital mixing console of course...and just stringing all the gear together. Which is a great option...just much different than something like PT.

If no one steps up and tries to take their market...will they be allowed to monopolize it forever?

2010- Dept. of Justice declares ProTools a monopoly. Forces company to split up. hehe...not liklely. But anyways, thoughts?

as far as sound quality goes that is dependent on ur A/D and D/A converters though software does have a hand in it
FYI for all u PT users stay off the mix buss its processes files and 48bit and dithers them back to 24 within this dithering process errors happen and as more and more processing the worse and worse the file gets...i dunno about the other apps but this was told to me by a PT Vendor

and as for control surface...who cares most people still use analog consoles to mix(Commercial releases thats is)

Are you saying that the Delta1010 and Sonor will not take over the industry?? hmmm...
