As for the question.... no - I play for $25 bar vouchers... some gigs $20, but this is Australia and it's a different world over here in the live scene...

so? The only way any musicians get good enough to be really skillful on their axes is by gigging. Hard to gig all the time unless a lotta it is covers.

Plus ... the very best top tier jazz players often mostly play 'covers'.
And the very best top tier classical players play 'covers'.
The term cover doesn't have much meaning.
Some people play covers as if they're a record player duplicating every note.
Others play covers like I do which is to play them so totally in their own style and like they wish that there's almost as much original stuff there as if it weren't a cover.

And yes, I have played in all original bands ...... probably will again ...... but I don't really see the difference since, to me, it's all about how virtuostic you get on your ax.

Yeah....that's the thing I miss about gigging, it really hones your playing skills...and certainly, doing covers pushes that maybe a bit more, if you are doing a huge variety of covers....but doing any kind of lgigs will help, as long as you have a desire to do them well.

Not saying that studio work is easy....it's just different, you can think about what you want to do, and then do it a bunch of times, plus you are focused on one song, one part....whereas during a gig, you are playing a different song every few minutes, so you have to be on your toes.

I don't get the whole thing. It sounds as though the OP is laying down the gauntlet to a bunch of people who come here because they enjoy playing, recording and talking to other people about it. No one here seems to have anything to prove. I don't understand why anyone would look down their nose at gigging musicians who make their living at it. Who cares if its covers?

The guys I know making money primarily do so through song placement in ads and films, royalties, voiceover, gigging (covers and originals) and second jobs. Getting something in a seasonal film (think Christmas) seems to be the holy grail. Whatever it takes. It's a tough road and they are either single, or don't have kids. A small but loyal base of core/rabid fans is worth more than gold - I hear that over and over. Very few people I know are selling a lot of download product, and the people who are moving stuff are selling botique physical stuff - creative artwork and packaging, vinyl, small runs. Stageits are becoming more popular.

I didn't get that from the OP at all. To me, it came across as asking where the money is at if you aren't gigging. Not all of us want to gig, yet still have hope there is a penny to be made from our efforts. I think that's where he's coming from.
 
I'm increasingly becoming more and more jaded about gigging. I'm starting to hate it. I love playing. I love playing music with my friends and bandmates. I hate packing up to go play a gig. Playing live in the garage in front of no one = awesome. Playing live out somewhere = dumb.
 
Hi Armistice! I'm aussie too mate. In Sydney, they have mic nights and they don't give out bar vouchers either! Where are you located?Lucky you! LOL
 
Hi chuckduffy! Firstly, I Wasn't trying to put down cover bands. I know they are the only ones who can pull a paying gig regularly. I'd like to know where all the music buying public are! They sure don't inhabit homerecording forums right:? lol..Until we can figure out how to promote original music as good as the majors do..keep waitin on that $0.0001 streaming return k?
