i'm thinking about the L-280s.........

single coil sound, but stacked, with an "air gap".....

one in the neck and middle, married to my lil 59'er in the bridge........

and should i stay with my 500k pots, or go to 250's for the single coils........?

there are very few single-coil-sounding pickups that have hum cancelling that will fit my custom guitar......

These are my favorite pickups. My '99 Fender Strat has the L-280's in the neck and middle (the best neck single coil type neck pickup IMO) and a S.D. Lil 59'er in the bridge. You will want to use 250k pots with the L-280's. I use 250k pots for the L-280's and the Lil '59er. Just because the L-280's are noiseless doesnt mean they lack any tone that is common with other noiseless or stacked single coil pickups. I cant say it enough how I love that L-280 neck pickup. Go for it! Just be sure you order from http://billlawrence.com and NOT stewmac or anywhere else!

Oh, Bill can also do custom string spacing to fit your custom guitar, custom anything actually just talk to him over the phone. It takes awhile to get the pickups made and shipped out but it is worth it!

THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK, DA. B. MAN-

What is the story with the stewart mcdonald versions of the bill lawrence pickups?

i was talking with my old luthier this afternoon, and he mentioned the same thing.......

the ones i'm looking at are off the lawrence site...............

It's a crazy story but I'll tell you this. The "other guy" was at one time Bill Lawrence's partner but they went their seperate ways. The "other guy" uses very similar names for his pickups that Bill used/or still uses. This "other guy" is basically using the Bill's reputation to sell his pickups (false advertising.) Over the past few years the word has gotten out and people are understanding what is going on and the "other guy" will probably not last much longer. You can read more details at Bills website, links on the home page. I just spent the weekend with Bill and Becky at NAMM, I learned quite a bit about pickups and Bill showed me some things. After you talk to him, you'll see how his experience and knowledge has made such an impact on guitar pickups. He made humbuckers for Gibson in the earlier-mid years, and is known to consult Fender from time to time. All the nonendorsing musicians (studio musicians, etc) are using his pickups. He has been there and had his part in what pickups are today nearly ever since the beginning of guitars with pickups. He is truely the ultimate pickup dude (not to mention one of the best jazz players in his time.) Look around at his website and read the articles that Becky has dug up over the years. You'll see, like I did, he has been there since the beginning and is still going at it.
I've never seen anyone that is respected as Bill, at NAMM every guitar company and other pickup makers knew him like a celebrity.
