Do you use carpet or hardwood under your drums?

I've always had carpet in my simi-enclosed drum area (in a smallish room). I like the sound, but never even tried a plywood sheet below. This would likely brighten up the kit. Are there any down sides, problems with reflections?
Maybe I should have been doing this all along?

buy some good earplugs!!

you may have a problem keeping your bass drum from sliding forward....(unless your bass drum spurs that have 'points')
 
You will get mixed opinions on this but based on the various experiances I've had both as a drummer (for over 30 years) and as an "engineer:

If indeed you have a small semi enclosed room, you will have problems controlling the overtones the room will generate (if you go with wood floors).

Some of the best drum tones I've gotten were from larger rooms with wood floors and high ceilings. But, as a general rule the smaller the room the more you need to control the sounds bouncing around.
