Do you pan your bass?

The clock face makes sense when describing pan positions. Let's not fight.
Except for half past.
I'll fight any man that pans at half past !

I learned to leave it in the center because a lot of times clubs only run in mono and if your panning bass around your mix will not translate as well to different systems. That and you want a good solid foundation that links the rhythm and melody. That is what the bass does. It can't be a solid foundation for the rest of your song or mix if its deciding which side of the mix to stand on.

But if clubs play back in mono, it makes no difference even if you panned it hard to one side...it's still going to be centered in mono. :)

I think some folks are reading the "panning" thing as always being something extreme, off to one side.

Trust me...panning something to 11:30 or 12:30 is not going to be noticed as off to one side and apart from the rest of the instruments, and as mentioned earlier in the thread...low frequencies are not very directional...so you could pan them even harder and they still sit well with all the other elements.

I'm not twisting anyone's arm... :D ...but try fanning apart all your elements even by small amounts...and see how the whole mix opens up in the stereo image (and still sounds good when summed to mono).
