how do you mix vocals? do you mix it while the beat is playing or do you solo the vocals and try to get them to sound good and them add them to the beat?

You should always mix with everything in. I only solo something when I want to hear it by itself, or if I am hearing something in the track (pops/clicks etc). But when comes to mixing the song, you shouldn't process something when it's solo'd because then when you put it back in the mix, things will change. You are trying to make it fit with the beat, so keep the beat there.

Me personally, I mix percussion first, then add the vocals in. To me, the vox are the most important part of a song, and they need to be in the forefront of the mix. After that, I mix the intrumentation around the vocals, using pan and eq etc.. to make sure there's no competition with them.

Jimmy is right. Never process something while solo'd, it always changes when the remainder of the mix is included.

After i record vocals, I personally lke to listen to the vocals all the way through once by themselves to check for performance, and then I play the instrumrnts with the vox when mixing.

If you're just listening to the vocals.......you're not really mixing :D
