Do you mix in surround or stereo? Please gimmie details on why you chose whichever one you prefer

i mix in stereo, because most music is mixed in stereo, and most normal music-playing devices play back in stereo.

yea thats what i was thinking. i never wanted to mix in surround because i figured that most playback systems are stereo. thanks for the feedback

if you're doing sound for a DVD or something, then it might be pretty good to mix in surround. for regular music recordings Stereo is still the standard AFAIK.

I doubt we will ever see a significant market for music surround.

I would say 99.9% of the time 99.9% of people listen to music is in environments that are NOT conducive to surround sound. Think about when most people are listening to music:

Mobile playback devices (ipods, boombox etc...)
Car
Work
Stereo system in other room while doing some task around the house.

Music CD's/DVD's are already REALLY inflated in price, and trying to fit in surround sound mixes into the whole production equation would just hike up the prices even more. People just don't care enough about the alleged "benefits" of surround sound to pay anything more for it. Even if costs would stay the same, most people just would not appreciate it much, nor be in a situation listening to music to appreciate it.

So, Stereo mixes would STILL need to be done, now every song needs two mixes, stereo and surround? No way labels are going to pay for that!

Also, as the center of gravity in the industry swings more and more towards independents like those of us who populate this board, you have another factor:

I don't know about you guys, but I can't afford three more 824s, a sub, a 5.1 desk, extra outboard gear, and increased acoustic design right now just to satisfy the DVD surround market :). Mixing in surround is an *expensive* proposition on top of what is already an expensive investment just for two channels.

i do about 85% of my mixing in mono. what's that count as? :D

cheers,
wade

Never mix in 5.1 and probably never will. Stereo is going to be the reference until we have more than two ears. :)

I've mixeed in 5.1 before, and MAN is it FUN!! but hard work too - much more time consuming then one would think it is.

Didn't the band Yes use some kind of quadraphonic or surround-like recording in one of their albums?

My dad was telling me about it.

Or maybe they just did something like binaural/holophonic recording to give that effect. Or maybe it was just stereo, I haven't listened to it yet.

The album name is kind of a giveaway. "Quadraphenia".
