Do you experiance noise haveing a crt monitor next to your monitors or amps?

I heard that crt monitors create noise or feedback when they are too close to audio monitors or guitar amps / PA speakers.

Have you found this to be true? If so how far away does the CRT monitor need to be to operate without noise?

I ask because I'm considering having a control room and practice space in the same room. Also, if they do create noise with audio monitors, how does that play out? I seen lots of photos where people have their monitors on either side of a desk with 1 or 2 video monitors in the middle.

I haven't experienced this and one of my monitors are at most a foot away from the CRT monitor

CRTs produce radiation. When I used a CRT I couldn't play my bass in front of it: it sounded like bacon frying. If your speakers are close, and not shielded, you'll get the same thing there.

Yes, I've had problems with CRT's and Elec GTR and Bass. I'm using an LCD and have no problems. My problems were primarily with noise, especially with single coil pickups. Didn't matter where I was in my rooom when tracking with Bass I had to turn the monitor off.

I dont have any problems, i.e no feedback, no discoloration on the screens and my screens are 5" away from each monitor.

If you are forced to place monitors directly up against a computer screen you should look into "shielded monitors".

About a full quarter of the projects I work on have some audible monitor whine in them. It's anywhere between 13 and 16kHz, depending on your resolution and refresh rate. I'd call it an "epidemic" for lack of a better term.

The big problem is that you won't notice it during tracking and mixdown because the monitors make that noise anyway. It's also a VERY easy sound to "ignore" after a very short time.

Most car stereos don't reproduce it well either...

SO - Make sure you turn those monitors OFF and listen very carefully during tracking and mixdown. Sometimes it's only on one track and fairly easy to fix with a notch filter. Sometimes it's across several tracks and harder to deal with.

One thing is for sure - If it makes it to mastering with that whine, I'll be giving you a call for a remix. Actually, there are worse things that can happen. It's a "fairly" easy fix that doesn't horribly affect the mix in most cases. Still, it CAN be easily avoided. You might have to move some cables, change some cables, move some gear, etc. to figure it out, but nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem with angry clients.

My monitors dont whine, unless I am deaf up in that frequency range.

Seriously I dont get interference within my mixes. If I did I would be up sh!ts creek without a paddle, because I mix internally and I need my monitors on to do that.

It certainly doesn't happen with everyone - But the big problem is that most people that it IS happening to don't know it until it's too late.
