Man, lately i've been isolating myself to my music only so i can get my own vibe back. I've been listening to tracks i did wayyy back(which really was only 2 years ago when i first started this digital stuff!). I'm starting to realize that some of my old stuff is some of my best sounding music. It may not have the best recording quality, but the quality of the lyrics and the music are on point. It seems like it's getting harder for me to make music because i hear flaws(recording quality wise) that i didn't hear when i didn't know anything about audio. As a result, i made better music. I still make great music, but i don't have the vibe and spontaneous creativity that i used to have. As a result, i'm going back in time. I'm about to make some original heat. I only have my eyes on two more pieces of gear(for vocals) then i'm chillin. I gotta get back on the grind man. Back then, i used a radio shack mic, stock computer soundcard, acid pro 4.0, fruity loops 3.56, saxophone, yamaha keyboard, and salt box(for cabasa lol!!). Do yall ever feel the same way about yalls music?

Yes, and I play rock mostly. This is a pretty common, so you're in good company!

ay tone when this shit happens it happens for a reason...you are spending to much time tryin to look for flaws now then you would have back then, you wanna make everything perfect and you prolly find yourself makin simple changes to beats and then all of a sudden the whole thing becomes a disaster ( i do that a lot) when shit like that happens to me it's time to do a collabo wit someone and get shit going fresh again u know?

i know and i hate tha feelin too... i find myself tryin to start over... makin new sounds, but i will never be able to not make those "lil changes" that no one else will notice... it bugs me wayy to much... and ive been wantin to do a collab since the thread earlier... whats goin down with that?

Yeah Tone I definitely feel you.
Now days I worry about compressor settings, gain structure, mic placement, Eqing, reverb etc.. etc... That takes away from my creative drive, the more new equipment I get the less music I make. When I had nothing I made better music because all I was worried about was getting it all on CD. I started off recording my vocals with a MXL V93 and an Art Tube MP going into my PC's soundcard. My vocals clipped like hell, beats sounded horrible level wise, but my overall music was better than it is now in my eyes, though others disagree.

Back then I made about 2-3 songs a month, about a 2 beats a week. Now I might do a song every month or 2 and maybe 2 beats a month. I think by trying to learn and better myself at Audio Engineering I've crippled my creative drive. I've gotten a hell of a lot better at mixing along with great ears, great tracking technique and great gear in my eyes but now I'm missing the great music. I'm in a slump right now I can't come up with anything...lol I listen to my older stuff and and hear good concepts and good melodies and I just can't get them now. So I definitely feel you.

im sort of like that.... but on the lyricist side... .like D Ease said thats when i collab.... its much better when the person you collab wit is in the studio wit you instead of like collabin over the net.....nothin against it cause i do it all the time... but when u looking to get your vibe back havin a talented artist wit you is a big boast cause yall can feed off each others energy...... i never tried this with production but then again i just started making beats in like june

Its a beautiful thing when real MCs can vibe off of a situation and help each other out. Damn I love this site

Man i used to grind real hard. I'd make about 3 songs a week and i'd make dozens of beats every week. My friends would come over and we'd make music for hours. Now, i make about 2-3 beats a week and about 2-3 songs a month. I'm trying to get back into my beat making routine. I'll tell you what tripped me out. I'm sittin up here bout to go crazy of recording quality and stuff when 9th wonder sold a beat to Jay-Z with the following equipment: Computer, 1200 turntable, fruitly loops, art tube mp, some bookshelf speakers, and an apex 430. When i saw that equipment list, i was like, what the heck am i doin? That taught me to get the best sound out of what i have instead of lookin for the next best thing. Regardless, because of researching and recording experience(home recording), i know what sound i'm trying to get now and i only have 2 more gear purchases ahead. After that, i'm gettin back to writing songs. While i'm waiting on the gear, i'm grinding hard making beats. I stayed up until 4 am last night going thru old beats and "sprucing them up" with better mixing and structure. I didn't want to go to sleep! Well folks, it's time to bring back the vibe. Workin on getting about 20 new beats to post on soundclick and sell, online or local. Holla!

Damn DOZENS a week?!?! With my best foot forward I can put out about 5 beats. You can go...I need to step my game up

Hell don't feel bad. When I started making beats, I was doing anywhere from 1-2 a week to dozens. Then I started making money off beats so I was making more beats. Then once I started slowing down to get back into writing lyrics and learning how to mix better. I'm on hiatus with all recording and beatmaking until HM is ready. Once I do that then I'll slowly start making beats again while I finish up Contagious (wedding, moving soon, and the wreck is killing my progress). Once that's done I'll probably go to about 5 - 6 new beats a month plus any money I make off custom beats (which is what I usually sell most of).

Sometimes you have to take the time to slow down and reprogram the machine if you know what I mean. Upgrade that shit. Truth is, I never used monitors or speakers on my beats....they're mixed on headphones. But I'll mix vocals and shit on monitors when I get them.

You can't strive to be too perfect because you might eliminate a "flaw" that creates 10 more flaws in its place. Kind of like roaches. You can kill one, but you're not gonna get all his homies.

man i felt the same exact way ! can you beleive i was like that for about 1yr and a half, i couldnt write because i was way too worried about my quality because i'd clip alot like mental said..but just said you know, its not that bad and you can always rerecord a song when you get your new stuff..i havent got anything new in that same time frame but im recording, you just gotta tell yourself ay look, we cant be perfect and deal with it...i have a art tube mp with a b-1 behringer plugged into my computer (soundblaster audigy 4)..
