Do people sing live using mic preamps?

There are a few acts that I work with that I bring external preamps to shows - only to get a different edge on the lead vocalist. These are usually high energy bands and need the vocal up and over the top.

does it make that much difference live?

What's an example (your ext. in place of..?

It does but it's just different not better per say.
Mind you I'm driving it very hard then into a compressor.
It's a very tailored sound.

Wrong. You don't get 57's in Hell. You have to do it all with AKG C1000S's,

and all the mic stands are 1/2" thread and all the mic clips have that little adapter stuck in there and you have no screwdriver or coin or anything to hoke it out with......

oh, are we not doing this anymore?

Heaven would be having C1000Ss then discovering you have no way to mount or use them. No sound is better than C1000 sound!

If you can find a mic preamp sounding better (and most are much better !) as mixer's input channel for you - why not ?
Mic together with preamp are forming your voice - like guitar amp together with guitar pickups is forming guitar's sound.
Many pro singers are using their preamps in live sound too.
It is simply inserted between mic and mixers line input channel.
I can only suggest to use transformer input tube preamp with changeable input impedance.
The best I know is GT ViPre, it is costly and discontinued to manufacture (GT was bought by Fender and all the best Pro Audio and MI products discontinued), but out of any competition for voice and other lead function.
