do i really need an expensive guitar

My guitars range from $299 (new G&L Tribute Fallout) to $3,000 Gibson Les Paul and other high end guitars. I set every one up to the same string height. The $299 G&L Tribute Fallout plays just as easy as the Gibson. The OP said they had an LTD EC1000 which are great guitars for the price. Crazy good. Would an actual ESP version play better ? Not if the setup is the same (action, neck radius, etc.). Now if the OPs' guitars had a different radius and string heights, then yes, if the OP preferred a different feel. So its just a "Cadillac" thing imho. Quality though.... dont get me started. Had issues with Gibson.

I agree with those who say it's the player more than the instrument. When I played golf, I had the same assessment. Spending money on excellent clubs would have nothing but the most minute impact on my golf game, because I'm a terrible golfer. A true master (virtuoso) may have a better case to make. To me, when it comes to guitar, is to play guitars that feel "good" to play. I'm not even saying more comfortable, but the one that meets you at the right place. I'm a big fan of Fender guitars. I have other brands, too, and some are literally much EASIER to play. Less stress on the fingers, etc., but I *like* the way my Fenders fight back a little. I feel the instrument's vibrations playing back to me, like we're having a bit of a duet, or maybe doing a dance. Somehow, I think it produces better performances on my part. Of course there's also the possibility I'm full of baloney! :ROFLMAO:

I guess you need to define "expensive". To me expensive guitars are $6000 and above.
Inexpensive are $1,000 and below. Inbetween those are the normal guieyes. To me.

And no, you can't hear the difference between them - unless you are listening with your eyes.
I was just thinking the same thing - that folks probably do have different ideas of what "expensive" and "inexpensive" guitars are (I have not read this entire thread to see if anyone else commented on that).

Having said that - I am primarily a LP/Strat guy. I'm not that picky. The feel of the neck in my left hand is the primary factor for me when judging if a guitar works for me (or not). And tuning stability and intonation are important. I don't care that much how a guitar looks - and electronics and hardware can be changed. Playability is key.

Having said all that - I have an $800 Charvel San Dimas that has become one of my favorite guitars to play. It has a FR - but I leave the bar out most of the time. That guitar and I have grown closer the more I have played it. Almost like we're settling in together - over 10 years time.
