I have been messing with my set up for a very long time.I'll work at it a while, get frustrated, come back a month later and so on.I have read many forums and quite a few books but something is lost in translation or my expectations.
All i want to do is record my voice through a karaoke system.I don't have any instruments.I would like to be able to record in 2 tracks to mess around with voice and music separately before mixing down.
I can record with my software but is is all together on one channel,i have no control over voice and music.

My set up is

JVC XL-SV22BK Karaoke CD Player ciao.com/JVC_XL_SV22BK_CD_player__10033986#productdetail

Yamaha EX66M powered mixer with 2 huge PA Club speakers,(i bought this as a set) pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-EMX66M-6Channel-Powered-Mixer?sku=630098

Dell E1705 laptop

Software is Cool Edit Pro 1.5

M-audio Audiofile Firewire (I think i ruined this by an accidental hot plug,it just flases now) soundonsound.com/sos/may04/articles/maudiofirewireap.htm

Seems the only way to hook this up is,karaoke player to "2TR In" on the mixer, then from "Rec Out" on mixer to the input on the audiophile, then of course my firewire cable to computer.

I just got Power cdg to avi conversion software. That lets me put an avi of the song in 1 track, music in another track and lets me record on another track but this is all through the computer and by passes all the other equipment unless there is a way to hook it all up to run through mixer. This is when i found i accidentally unplugged the audiophile firewire cable from computer and instead of shutting down computer,i just plugged it back in like a dope.
I have to be able to hear the music and see the words to be able to sing to it.
I just don't know, the more i try to figure it out,the more lost i get.Should i dump everything and get a different set up?I don't even know if i have the right equipment.
My name is mike and yes i am a noob :(
Can anyone put me on a good path please?

This is what I would try:

1 Put the karaoke CD into the CD/DVD slot of the laptop, and see if you have anything that will extract the audio from it. IF you don't have anything, yo may be able to download something that will do this (for example, CDEX and similar).

2 This will give you a stereo audio track (.WAV) which you can then import into an audio program. If you don't have one, try downloading Garageband, Reaper or similar.

3 You can then play this track in the audio program, and listen to it via the Audiofile, while you record a vocal on a separate track.

4 Once you've done this, you can then mix the stereo audio with your vocal track to taste.
