Do I need midi?

I have been using a Zoom H4N and I'm thinking of getting a computer interface to see if it sounds any better. For the small cost (less than $150), it seems like something worth trying. Anyway, I have heard good things about the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as an interface, but some have noted that it doesn't have midi I/O. I'm just a newby at this, so can someone tell me whether this is something I would need?

As of right now, I have two condenser mics plugged into the Zoom to record acoustic guitar and bass in stereo. I also have a mic I use for vocals. I then transfer it to the computer DAW (Reaper) and mix it. It seems like the 2i2 would do this just fine. Technically, I know what midi is, I just don't understand how it would play into my setup? Is it something I should have? Presonus and some others have similar devices with midi but they tend to get mixed reviews. Is it something I should look into?

The mixed reviews are nothing to do with midi.
The midi I/O allows for midi data to be transmitted from a keyboard or drum machine….things like that.

The data is pretty much sheet music for computers. Note pitch, duration, velocity etc.

Short answer: If you don't use midi, you don't need midi I/O. :)
 
I've never ever used MIDI in an audio interface... and I use MIDI drums, soft synths etc. all the time, direct in Reaper...

So I wouldn't worry about it for now..

No, you don't need MIDI but I always think those AI makers that don't fit it on a £100+ interface are tightareses!

The 2i4 with MIDI is another nifty. Ok, so you get two extra unbalanced outputs, big, 'king deal!

I therefore always suggest the Steinberg UR22.

As long as you have good samples, no you don't necessarily need one; however, I do use one because sometimes i like to just play the piano/whatever take straight into my DAW
 
You don't need midi ports built into your audio interface. I've used a separate MidisportUSB2x2 for years with zero problems.
