do i need a receiver for my studio for my monitors?

Do you already have the monitors?
What kind of monitors do you have?

I use one with passive monitors but if I had the cash I'd get a power amp instead.
 
Those are Powered Monitors, and require no amplification. If you have digital out, use it, otherwise run a line level signal to the analog inputs of the monitors.
