I've got a Tascam 488 mk II, should I get a pre-amp? I'm thinking a M Audio DMP3 or would there be not much difference seeing as there's already a pre-amp built in? I'm recording acoustic guitars, vocals, electric guitar, bass and drums. Cheers :)

No need for a better mic pre unless you intend to upgrade to a better recording device.

Actually, I'd go along with that. I do tend to encourage punters to get a pre~amp but with the 488, the on board pre~amps should suffice for what you're recording. If the MK 1 is anything to go by. I would only really have needed a pre~amp on my 488 for acoustic guitar leads.

It's been slightly more then a decade since I used a 488 but I remember the MKII as only having 2 channels with built in mic-pre. Additional outboard pre's would be helpful if you are tracking more then two mic signals at a time. The DMP3 won't provide a significant improvement to the system but it should integrate well with 488

the only reason i went with external preamps on my old rig is because i had to run a condenser through a line in. remember you don't want to run two mic pres into each other (external preamp into a xlr input on your interface).

Even though I understand what the guys are saying about a better recording medium than the 488, I have to add that I recorded a friend some years ago that was using a 488..I used better outboard pres and the results were very different ( in a good way) than using the built in pre..Actually, the final product ( after mixing/mastering from a different console) was played on Regional radio stations with very good acceptance..!..Good luck

Thanks, that pretty much answers my question. if I can get one for cheap I may as well experiment, if not then no loss :)

Don't get one that's too cheap..( cheap design that is, as there are less costly ones with good designs, etc.), because it may be worse than the ones on the 488 and skew your decision/purpose of an external pre amp..Good luck..
