Hello... I am trying to start a simple, inexpensive setup to record vocals on my computer. So far, I have Audacity (which I'm pretty familiar with), an Audio-Technica AT2020 mic, and AKG K240 monitor headphones. My main question is, what is the best way to connect the microphone to my computer since it's an XLR cable? Should I get a mixer or a microphone pre-amp? Also, the headphones have a 1/4 plug, so they don't fit into the regular headphone input on my computer, so should I just get a simple 1/4 to 1/8 adapter plug or is there something that I can get that will allow me to plug my mic into it and also plug in the headphones and monitor it that way? I apologize if any of these questions are no-brainers; I am a beginner and I just wanna make the best decisions, lol. Also, I am on a budget, so I really need to stick to inexpensive stuff that is still decent quality. Thanks in advance!

You should go with a interface. You can get one fairly cheap if all you need is one input + phantom power. That way you can plug your headphones in, and when you get some monitors, you can go that way. You could always get a cheapy preamp and then go straight into the computer but honestly your better off using a computer mic because the quality is horrid.

I personally use a Maudio Fast Track pro and im ok with the results. You would be ok with a USB if your only going to be recording vocals.

Something like that. Id say your not going to find much NEW for less than $100 that wont start degrading the quality. Someone please feel free to correct me. Take a look around ebay and see what you can find out.

Thanks for your help; I believe that is exactly what I need!
