won't the workstation work without a computer or will the workstation work better with a computer? which is better to have a workstation or a computer? or both?

both. We have the new fostex 16 track hd and being able to drop down into the computer for editing and adding effects is advantageous.

can't i use hardware equipment for the effects and stuff or is it just better to use a computer?

Yes, you can use hardware. Remember once you record a track with an effect you cant get rid of it if you dont like it. You can always add them in later at your leisure and make sure if you like it or not. It is just easier editing on a computer monitor than a tiny little led readout. Also your computer should have a little more ram etc to work with. I am not the best source for this info and I would take anything I say here with a grain of salt and doublecheck .

so i should get a pretty descent computer that is reliable and cost effective

I would suggest before you run out and buy a computer you should do your homework. Find out exactly what you want to do and what you need to do it with. Do a good search at the site here, it is loaded with info and should answer most of your questions. People here have rated most of the stand alone units and software etc. Use the search option at the top of the page and search out the info you need. I am by far not the most knowledgable person here to be answering your questions. I record mostly on an adat . We just got the Fostex and I am now learing that. I do know that I dont want to be doing my editing on that tiny little led screen. I usually record flat and dry and add eq and effects later.

thanks for your help alot i realy appreciate it any thing that i need to know tell me, anything that i don't need tell me. i have a really good computer in mind and its the apple dual 800 mghz g4 processor its got gobs of space and software better than any computer out their in my opinion.

Gnuwyne, welcome to this site. :)

Have you done any computer based home recording before?

If, you haven't, then you should do a thorough (sp?) search on this site, when it comes to choosing your software for you MAC.

peace...
