I'm considering buying a RNP at some stage. The only specific criticism I've heard from users (and only some users) is the coarseness of the 6dB gain knob. When I fiddle with my presonus vxp gain which is continuous and not stepped I don't imagine 6dB steps would be too much to worry about although smaller would be nice. Any specific feedback from users on this point?

about trident

ive used trudent consoles several times. even owned one.
i can attest to the fact that they sound good. dont know about the new offerings however.
i think if i remember they used standard op amps.
someone correct me if i'm wrong.
anyone know what components gave them that great sound?
transformers ?

The older Tridents, 80 series, used a good transformer followed by good opamps with gain intelligently distributed amongst them all. If I remember, the first opamp was 5534, followed by a 071.

Simple and good performance.

The later ones, the 24's and 65 types use a transformerless input that is pretty well done too, doesn't sound as "nice" but is certainly useable. I think these are using duals, TL-072's, but it might still be single 071's. I'd have to go jerk a channel to remember...I haven't been inside my 65 for a couple of years. It's nice when stuff just keeps working, isn't it.

Helps to not buy crap, I guess.

If I were just starting to build a collection of nice quality pres, I'd buy an API luchbox and start filling it with API and OSA pres.

you can always insert a compressor/limiter to help max out the signal... or fiddle with the mic placement a bit more, or just be more conscious your own musical dynamics when performing...

there are endless solutions that would actually be helpful for any engineer to explore.

RNP is a good deal.
