Do I need a better pre?

I now have the Meek VCQ1. I was considering the RNP as an addition.... is the Meek as good (in terms of quality) as the RNP? Since I have the Meek, should I even waste the money on another pre in the same range?
Thanks,
RF

I used VC3Q as my only mic pre for my first album.

My mix tends to sound a little muddy as the tracks add up.

Don't know how much different is the pre on the VC1Q and VC3Q.

But I plan to get the RNP as an upgrade....

don't get fooled by the price tag....the likes of harvey gerst and fletcher have said on numerous occasions that it competes with pre's in the 1000+ range...and i guarantee you mix won't get muddy as tracks add up you might find it to clean...

If all of your other ducks are in a nice, even row, then no, you don't need a better preamp. Now go make some music.

Chessrock,

If you are ever going to become a gear pimp, when someone says "do I need a better preamp?", you say YES!.

Alright, maybe he could use another mic, then, come to think of it. :D How about a Soundeluxe? Something BLUE would be nice.

Anyone ever use and like Trident? I have a deal in front of me that I might not be able to pass up!? It's a dual channel pre from Trident at GC. Are they good? I'm not a price looker but the tag says $1499, which is not the price I would get it for.

The toft pres are half that and are designed by the Trident designer to be exactly like the trident boards he recorded Bowie on.

That may be worth looking into. for like $799 for 2 channels.

Froogle showed that 8thstreet and Humbucker music also carries the ATC-2, but no one was shown having a price any lower than a dollar under a thousand.

Where do you find these prices! At $800 I think the Toft would be a hell of a deal.

Im in a different situation. I already have the RNP and I'm thinking that I need better. The guitar and the voice behind the mic are are both quality but i keep thinking I need something more than the RNP. Somebody stop me from thinking such foolishness!

Naw. You're not being foolish. Anything that's got guzintas & guzouttas written on the back of it will NEVER find its way into my studio.
I haven't used one, and I never will.
Give me an API or Melinia Media, or Neve-esque pre anyday!

well, I have an RNP over here along side my Great River ME-1NV, and a Vintech X73 (amongst others)..You'd be suprised how well the RNP hangs with those pre's and gets used quite a bit (who cares what it looks like or whats written on the back)

Hey, if it works for you, that's great!
But I'm not at all interested in one.

Darrin's right...stay away from the GC trident. If Malcolm Toft is not the designer than I'd stay away from them. The ATC2 definately would be worth checking out.I have a pair of trident flexmix (1979) which have malcolm's transormers in them and updated opamps and they sound superb...If I were you I'd check into that option as well. There's a guy from canada that's selling a pair on ebay racked, power supply and all for $1049.00.
