Bdgr is right I like kids and they seem to like me too, but I don't know how long I'll be able to teach "Old McDonald Had a Farm" without going postal.

a lot of good insight already posted.

A good teacher has patience, can be inovative and gets a joy out of seeing someone grow. Patience with your student as well as yourself.

You learn by teaching... you learn how to teach and you learn more about your instrument.

Don't teach for the money.... you will hate it. Teach because you enjoy teaching. playing music is the same.

Theory is an integral part of understanding music. You probably know more than you realize. You can learn a little more theory and help your students. But remember, theory is like garlic...
a little goes a long way,
if you spread it on too thick your friends will start keeping their distance,
you shouldn't try to use it in everything
but most important.... you really don't want to live in a world without it!

I got my first student yesterday! He's a friend that been trying to learn guitar for a while now, but has been having trouble. He says that he's got "stupid fingers." He already knew most of his open triads and he could make his changes on time as long as the beat was simple. So, I taught him the shuffle rhythm, showed him how to embellish his chords by adding the 7th, showed him a simple turnaround and in about half an hour he was starting to approximate music.

No, but in this third band I am hooking up with to make some extra money I think I'm going to have to start.

I actually taught myself to play. I can not read music or anything like that, I play by ear. I am now way into classical music. Even though I do not have the capabilities of being able to read music, I teach others, to do it by ear also. I currently have 7 students throughout the week, pretty good for a 20 year old. Easy money too. Amazingly, I can not teach myself to read music, just have a block with it for some reason....... Anyopne else seem to have this problem, or know of some good sources I could read to help me learn?

One thing I did once as a project and tried it out on a student.
I did a tape of the lesson and gave tunings on the tape so he could tune to me.
I did several tunes on it and went over it slowly so he could get the hang of it.
For this kid it worked, I was going to put it all together in a cassette and book which is still on the back burner, but it did work.
I do however get frustrated as hell with teaching, generally boys all want a magic spell that you are going to cast and they will be Eddie Van Halen, when they find they actually have to work 90% drop out. Girls on the other hand have stickability.
good luck with it, but seriously consider the tape, it sure advanced my student.
Then I left the country and lost touch.

Interesting idea. It could be taken a step further and you could put all of the instructional material and musical examples for each lesson on a CD that they could take home.

Of course, one of the advantages of home recording, seeing I am on strike today about layoffs and could be next in line this might be a timely project to resurrect.
