Do all microphones require a preamp?

There are also mics with digital outs (Beyer, Neumann), that won't need a preamp. In fact, you couldn't hook it up to one even if you wanted.

With that said, the mic has a preamp built inside, so it depends on how you put it.

You still don't need / can't use a preamp for it though.

I'll go for Salt Lake City

D'oh! :D

I was invited to Sarah Lawrence a couple of times; that's why I was asking. Never been to Salt Lake City, though.

LOL - that's hilarious - never seen that one before!

er... the expression is "...for all intents and purposes...."

Haha... I pressed the moron switch before posting that. Apparently it's a common oral translation. Either way, the basic message was:

pre = good.

Not sure if anyone needs to know this, but the Neumann Solution D digital mic doesn't require a preamp.

I've been wondering about that mic... do you think there will be a "Solution E"? ... or do you think that will be "the final solution"?

Depending on the mic and the sound you're recording... a lot of mics won't need a pre-amp... like an M-149 in front of a kik drum doesn't need a pre-amp... and there are a few other scenarios I don't remember at the moment... but they exist.
