DMP3 worth the extra 100? rather than VTB1 for hip-hop vocals?

Thanks

Most places only have the DMP-3 for about $40 more than the VTB-1. The DMP-3 is also a 2 channel preamp and the VTB-1 is 1 channel, so if you don't need 2 channels at once, you might want to figure that into your decision. Also, the DMP-3 has a solid state signal path, where the VTB-1 has the "tube warmth" function.
These are solid and common budget pre choices so you might want to search this MB for more opinions of them in combination with different mics that are close to whatever you're going to be using.

If you need two channels, then yes. If you only need one, then probably not (The DMP3 is two-channel and the VTB1 is 1). For hip-hop vocals? I don't think the mic pre gives a flying fuckola whether you're doing rap or polka. But I suppose you could always ask it, just in case it has a preference.

Well it could have been for recording anything so i put vocals so people on the forum would have a better idea from what im recording. I only neeed on mic pre by the way.

The dmp3 sounds cleaner and probably has a wider frequency response. The vtb1 sounds thicker, to my ears. I have'nt used my vtb1 much. I don't like it as a direct box for guitar or when micing my acoustic. I'm not ecstatic about the dmp3 for vocals. Did that help?..............they're cheap ass preamps. Just pick one and quit sweating it. Every mic will sound different thru every preamp and every voice will sound different thru every mic/preamp. The only way you'll know which you like more is by buying both and comparing.

yea, i removed the funny word after thinking about it for a minute. the dmp3 does'nt sound open to me even though it does sound more open than the vtb1. i would say that neither really sound open though. i'm trying to stay away from those funny words but they keep creeping in. thanks Homerec for all the funny words.

I say double mic with 2 mics at once on the DMP-3 that way the other channel want get jealous. :D

I think a more accurate description would be to say that they both have a solid state signal path... but the VTB-1 has parrallel tube distortion circuit...

Totally uninformed hypothesis follows

Hip-hop to me is a pretty generic term, like 'rock', so I don't really know what you're going for, but-

It seems to me a lot of rap has a pretty gritty sound to the vocal, like the distortion somehow gives it more street cred, keeps it more 'real'.

For that reason alone, I would tend to think the VTB1 might be better for your application. If that's not what you're going for, or you are going to want to use it for other things as well, I'd vote for the DMP3. Not much more money for a second channel, and a pretty good rep for being clean at that level of pre.

Just my guess.

I'd like to hear a shootout between these two preamps for vocals only. Most recordings i find on the internet for these are acoustic. I've heard rave reviews about both but i just need to hear for myself which one has a better sound to my ears. Man if i had the cash, i'd get both and test them myself. That'd make the decisions alot easier. I don't have the luxury of going to a guitar center. Yall know anywhere online with a vocal comparison between the two?

In all seriousness, :D , no bsing, :D , the dmp3 (or dmp2) and vtb1 sound VERY similar to me. I don't think that I would pick either one over the other. For the millionth time, an acoustic clip:

One pre was used to record the first half of the clip and the other pre was used for the second half. Can you tell where one ends and the other begins? Which is which?

My room is kind of noisy so don't go thinking the pre's and mic are making all that racket. :D

Consider this...

Actually, for a single source (vocal track recording), the VTB1 might be what you're looking for. If you were recording an acoustic instrument in stereo, where you need an extra squeeky-clean preamp (comparatively speaking), the DMP3 might be the better choice, but for a single channel situation where you might want to try varying degrees of clean/thick to find the perfect "phat" sound, I'd go with the VTB1. Good luck with your tracks!
