dmp3 and optical converter

I'd like to bypass the mic pres on my DAW that does not have an insert point. I do have an optical in. Any thought on upgrading to a dmp3 preamp and using a a/d converter with optical output such as the behringrer ultramatch? Is the behringer product going to hinder the sound quality?

doesnt M-audio make a pre with a optical out? that would probably work better, and cause less headaches.
