DMP-3 or RNP?

I am trying to decide which pre-amp to buy. The DMP-3 is cheaper, which is good. I will be using it with a Blue Baby Bottle and a MXL v67g and I will be mostly using it for vocals and guitars.
Is there going to be a huge difference between the Maudio and the FMR?

I have both.
The FMR Has a fuller bodied sound through the mids and has quite a bit more headroom for loud or percussive stuff like drums.
The DMP-3 has a very neutral transparent sound which works well for acoustic guitar and vocals.
They are both very quiet under reasonable gain settings. The RNP has channel inserts to plug in compressors, the DMP does not.
Phantom power is switchable on a per channel basis on the RNP, the DMP is all or nothing. Thr RNP has stepped gain settings at like 6 db each click the DMP has continuously varialble gain knobs (which makes it easier to match left / right levels when recording irregular stereo sources.)

The RNP is my favorite pre( I have 2 of them), but the DMP is generally my first choice for micing acoustics unless I want a very close in-your-face guitar sound. Then I pick the RNP.

Hope that helps.

A couple of years ago someone posted an acoustic guitar shootout between these two pres, and most people chose the DMP3 for that app. A subsequent bass shootout was won by the RNP. I have a DMP3 and agree with tmix's assessment of it's strengths (acou guit and vox). In the RNP price range I'd also look at the Brick.

dmp-3.........................................cleaner

rnp..............................................a little more colored

your choice!

ok.. so i think i am going to go with the DMP-3.

but here is one last question... I already have a ART Tube MP preamp. i've been happy with it considering how cheap it was. is the DMP-3 going to be a noticable difference to the ART?

More than likely yes, but it depends on how good your monitoring system is to be able to tell the difference.

I would guess that the REAL difference would be that your OVERALL finished mixes would sound cleaner. It wouldn't make every track by itself suddenly sound really good, though.

Tom,

Thank you for your assessment. I recently purchased the DMP3 because I wanted to upgrade from my Tube MP. The main function of this new pre would be for vox (mine) and acoustic guitars. Every now and then it’s nice to hear another voice helping you justify a purchase. :D

The DMP3 is a step up from the Tube MP. IMHO the MP is darker than the DMP3.
