DIY cable hangers

As I've mentioned before, because the joists of my studio floor go the width (unlike the architectural drawings), running the cables between joists is not doable. I've installed toilet flanges in the floor front and back, and was going to elbow that across the garage ceiling. Then I thought of this idea, which I like better - ceiling mounted cable hangers.

Essentially its three pieces of 1/2" square tubing welded together to make a very flat "U", with long 3/8" lag bolts bolting it to the ceiling. Almost too easy.

First picture, material cut to make eight such hangers, second picture, completed hanger before painting.

The completed hanger was welded so the lag bolts go through the legs, thus not requiring any additional material to make brackets, rings, eyelets etc. Simply bolt through. It's strong as hell and weighs almost nothing, thus making it very easy to install overhead. The cable space inside the bracket is about 3.5" to 4" or so, and about 8-9" wide.

Cheap and easy.

very nice i presume it would work just as well with wood, gotta make some of those.

For the same strength, the wood would have to be thicker, but yes, one could use wood just as easily.

I was originally going to take a 20' board and give it two 4" sides the whole length, and run the cable in that, but then I realized hanging it would be a pain, and I didn't feel like trying to line up sections.

I just find metal less of a hassle to work with I guess.

Looks like a perfect solution for what you needed. Now, where is the zillion feet of audio cabling that needs to be installed? I don't see that yet. Frederic, you really need to focus on priorities here :D

Darryl.....

Darryl,

Once I have the hangers on the garage ceiling, THEN I can start cutting and laying the cabling that goes between the console table and the producer's racks.

I just didn't want to run the cable, having its entire weight supported by solder joints.

Also waiting for some of the cable to arrive, actually. The audio snakes I have, the coax of various types I have, cat 5 I have, just waiting for the fiber optics and the rs422 cabling to arrive.

Ah, I see......... any excuse to delay the start of 10,000 solder connections :D

Really, though, I'm just giving you a hard time (I hope you realize that).

Darryl.....

Wouldn't you delay this?

Gives me something to do after my wife delivers and my ears can't take the crying anymore. It's all about timing :D

Bust my chops, its cool, I got it :)

frederic,

You're gonna be so used to welding, that you'll forget how to solder...

I can see it now... the first time you go to solder a cable end, you wind up melting the whole thing in one giant fused melted mess :)

You'll make some lame excuse about "not being able to see the solder tip with my welding mask on"

hahahaha
