DIY Cab Advice...

The best sounding quad I've ever struck was an old(er) Boogie 4x12 600watt, half closed, half open. Boogie later downgraded the speakers to a 300watt total and I think the design has been discontinued.

It's been my thought to build a pair of 2x12 cabs similar to what is in the pic (courtesy of ebay Aust.,) BUT to close the bottom and leave the top open.

wow that pic is pretty much exactly what I had in mind!! 2 of those for my stereo rig - it'll be awesome!

I'll cover it black, and spray the hardware UV green :D :D Things like corners, the rims (gaskets?) or the speakers and the handles uv green! would look sweet

Do it bro. I've built a LOT of my stuff. The fun is in the journey, not the destination.

Looks like the old ADA cabs. I've been considering building two like that myself as new store bought ones are an uncommon find these days but think having a pair is a really flexable combination.

1) Much easier to transport two of them to a gig than one 4x12
2) You can use just one at a time for smaller gigs
3) The ablity to break them apart in stereo with some distance in between is mad cool.
4) You can leave one at home and one at rehearsal.
5) One can be your moniter while the other points at the audience

I'm suprised they never caught on bigger than they did but I guess they were just more popular in the 80's when stereo rack units were more common.

I have 2 Sunn 610L cabs, each has six ten inch speakers, one cabinet has a bass port, one does not, and I replaced all speakers with uniform Eminence speakers. The speaker cabinet with the bass port is far and away my favorite. Much less "stopped up" as in when you have a cold sounding. Not only does it have a lower floor on the bass freq's it is overall a more balanced cab.

If I had extra time and money on my hands I'd build a series of cabs. The first cab would be a 412 Marshall clone, the next would be that cab plus a bass port, the third would be the first with an extra cubic foot of internal space, the fourth would be the third with a bass port, and so on and so forth. That'd be cool.

hmmm in that case maybe I should experiment with a port? don't you need software to work out the dimensions correctly though??

edit- of the port size I mean not cab size, as software usually tells you the cab needs to be the size of an oil tanker lol :)

Your going to have to decide what speakers you want in there first as different models require different box and port designs based thier individual parameters. No need to get roped into buying any expensive catalog software program to figure it out though as these programs are quite simple and plenty are available for free on the internet. Just Google "free speaker port calculator" and your set.

cool thanks NRS... i am also certain I will be using Eminence speakers.... either Wizards or something similar!
