Distortion in recording

I am using a pair of MXL V63M condenser mics into a Behringer 1622 mixer via XLR to a Fostex MR16. I am a brass instrument player. When I record I get some distortion on my tracks. I set the trim controls as per instruction on both units. I set the FX on the Behringer to #10(small room). If I try a longer reverb the problem gets worse. I can eliminate the problem by reducing the mic gain on the mixer but then I lose the presence I desire on the track. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site.

What input on the Fostex are you plugging into?? Hopefully, it's not an XLR jack. Why can't you plug the mics directly into the Fostex and bypass the Behringer??

If you plug headphones into the Behringer, do you hear distortion then?

Do the mics have pad switches or attenuators?

hth,

I have been told to use the balanced XLR jack. Yesterday I purchased a pair of Behringer C-4 microphones and connected them to my 1622 mixer. The problem seems to be solved. I'm getting a natural sound with the presence I desire
