I'd hate to cross post but this is prolly a more appropriate board to post this to. I use my computer to mix down to using a SB Live! Value card (older card) from a Tascam 688 8-track cassette recorder. My problem is that my levels can never get very high without distorting, especially low end bass. All my songs end up being much quieter than they should be. I have no problem with distortion AT ALL playing back on my 688. Could it be the speakers? Or the card? Or both? I use old JVC stereo speakers (without a power amp). I listen to other recordings (MP3s from ripped CDs), and they are louder but not distorted. What do I do?

Quite a statement, coming from a newbie, directed to an "expert member"!
I have been mixing down to my Sound Blaster PCI128 from my Tascam 688 and distortion is not much of a problem. If you check your SB mixer settings, make sure the input volume isn't too high. I tend to think that everything comes clean through the headphones/speakers because those are actual physical loads, whereas the soundcard input must have some dB limit. I haven't had any problems with distortion ever since I lowered the volume on my input fader. But then, I've been recording harp, viola and vocals, so there aren't too many loud sources. :)
