Distorting Sonar 5?

So I have Sonar 5 Studio, a Presonus firepod and M-Audio BX5A monitors, when I put down a track of drums, they go down fine, not too hot, then I play them back and I'm very pleased with the results (first-timer!) :D
But then the track hits and certain point and starts distorting. :mad:
It's completely random wherever it starts and there's no volume change in the playback either, I'm wondering what is causing this problem? :confused:

Are you using ASIO drivers?

If the distortion starts at random points, you could be experiencing latency.
It could also be caused by an effect...using reverb by chance?

Try ASIO drivers, and adjust the latency to a setting your machine can handle. Leave the slider at "safe" and try something between 5ms and 10ms latency.
If you are using effects, try playing the clip with them turned off.

I was using WDM drivers, I'll try the ASIO though, I doubt it's latency though, I just custom built the PC (3.4ghzx2 processor, 2 gigs of OCZ RAM) so it should be able to handle almost anything I throw at it, also I'm already running at 10ms of Latency in in the Presonus Control Panel. I'll pursue it further though, thanks for your help.
 
It doesn't really matter how beefy your system is if the settings and drivers are off...you could still get crackling.

Also, some (most) reverbs will put a strain on any system if you are using multiple instances of it.

ASIO will likely clear up your problem though...if it is latency related.
 
I'll bet it's the drivers too.

I have a custom-built rig, more than capable...if I use anything other than ASIO, I may as well be using a comodore 64.

I'm experiencing the same thing on my Sonar using Alesis USB board.

I just use the output of my soundcard and it is fine.
 
Yeah, it turns out that I didn't have the Firepod installed quite rightly, but I reinstalled the drivers ASIO, WDM etc right and now the cracklings stopped, thanks guys, YAY! If you wanna hear something I recorded, check this out:
