Distorted guitar meat

oh and i just listened to the new guitar sample. kick sounds awsome man, the bass is where it's lacking. it has no definition and, some bands go for that but not to that extent. try adding some 200-300 htz and pull out the 30 htz. also, boost the 900-1100 range by about 2 decibels. this should give the bass some recognizable tone. it lacks a lot of punch so you may need to retrack after all with a meatier sound. then, slowly remove some mids until it has definition but sits well in the mix. you guys have a cool sound.

there's no bass in that mix?!! well holy shit man.... once you add bass, it's just going to phase cancel the bass heavy guitars and reduce overall bass in the mix. use the bass for bass and the guitars for guitar.

after listening to your clip, you can definitely get a much deeper guitar tone than that. not knowing your amp though, I have no suggestion. I would throw that tone out and start over. if you can't afford a nice high gain amp and cab, maybe consider a POD XT approach.

also, maybe got over to UltimateMetal.com and hang out there some. start on the Andy Sneap forum.

A different approach.

Ok, this is gonna make me sound like a halfwit, but I've been using this...... um.... approach I guess you'd call it for about 7 years now. I don't know why I didn't mention it before. I have an old 80's metal strat that has been gutted and rebuilt so many times that it just isn't anything specific anymore. Ok, lets see. I locked the Floyd Rose down with 3/4 inch wood screws and washers and removed the locks from the nut for starters. Now I have settled on a SH-11 Seymore bridge p/u with two stacked neck humbuckers (Seymore also) in the center and neck positions. Respectable setup I think.

Now here is the odd part I think. I use 13 thru 54 acoustic strings(usually Dean Markley) tuned down a whole step, then "dropped C" through a GT-6 into an '84 Peavy Roadmaster. It is REALLY low. I mean barely holding intonation. It is a little hard to convince the bassist to tune that low also. But you can just set all the amp and processor settings for a normal guitar setup and with minor fine tuning, I get a very Dry Kill Logic or Korn(debut) sound. And you don't have to change the strings that often because old dead acoustic strings get heavier the older they get. Plus when you hit all six strings, in a standard D chord for instance, they just scream. Soloing with strings that big is utterly impossible and the first few time people see your guitar they ask if you've hit your head, but hey, it sounds great for what I do.

Sort of a simulated 7 string for poor people via 1999. Without the low B.

I don't know, try it out, tell me what you think, laugh behind my back........
It's all cool.

I havent recorded the bass yet!
Thanks for the compliment and the suggestions.
Some of the meat of the kick drum actually comes from the bleed into the snare drum beleive it or not.

I am using a Mesa Boogie triple rectifier through a MEsa 4 x12 and a Marshal JCM2000 DSL50 through a 1960 4 x 12 cab.

I would never use pod.

Yeah someone else was saying use heavier string guage and drop the tuning down. We cant drop the tuning down, and are too poor for more strings. :)
Might try that once we start selling more albums.

I had a listen to your distorted guitar tones. They sound cool. I beleive you have used more mids on the Mesa than me, but I dont like the amount of crunch on some of your tones. But that is becuase we are both going for different sounds. I am going for a more metal/rock sound.
I also have cut alot of the lo end at mixing so mine sound a bit thiner.

Peace,
Eck
