Yeah, lol...why fight it, eh?

Hey man, since you're here...and since you bumped this, I was wondering if you could give me one more opinion. I got the track back from my bass player, and he toyed around with the final mix. It sounds like he just ran it through a pretty severe compressor, but I'm kinda' burnt on the tune right now, so it's hard for me to be objective. I've got both versions posted...if you or anybody else has an opinion on which version sucks less, I'd like to hear it.

"AWAY - (squashed like a grape)"

Thanks,
Chris

hey chris,
i listened to the main version and the squashed like a grape version............the squashed version does sound like it might have more volume, but i think i can hear what you're saying about the squashing.....that being said, what i hear always seems to be influenced by what others say, so hopefully i'm not hearing that just because you said:D

anyhow,. the song's cool.......i haven't heard anything like this from you before........great song.....cool guitar sounds.......is that lead out of an acoustic too?........also, the autotune sounds pretty sweet......did you do it for the whole lead vocal?

Hey Powder: Thanks for listening to both. I didn't use the Antares ball squeezer for the whole vocal. I used it on "AWAY," and on the weird vocal at the end, and a couple of other places. Anyway, it's fun to post a band tune; my stuff depresses me. LOL.

[edit] Yeah, all the guitarwork is an acoustic. That lead was done with a slightly different setting on the Tubescreamer, then I just ran it through a phaser b/c my wah pedal is in Houston. The pedal definitely sounds better, b/c you can control the phasing. Incidentally, I know the solo sounds lazy, but in my defense, I played it with my 2 year-old in my lap, in between me and the guitar. He freaking LOVES the amplifier. Bangin' his little head the whole time...but I had to do it quick, b/c my wife was all frowning about not being able to go into the bathroom without her ears bleeding.

Nice work on your tune, btw.
Chris

LOL @ your avatar... :D :D :D

No really man... I do wish I had autotune for the Christmas tune.. that way, instead of doing fifteen fricking vocal takes and spending all day comping,... I can just do two takes and "tweak" whatever didn't come oat right... :p

As for the "canned" sound,.. that has to do with electric drums... They're rarely done "well"... and speaking of the drums... holy Lord... you compressed those cymbals to death dude... seriously... you can barely hear the hi-hat cause it's so smashed... :p And the cymbals have a high "sheen" on 'em that's a bit piercing... I know you already hate me for this.. :D, but really,.. the only seriously detracting aspect of the recording is how much the drums stick oat. (oh yeah... IMNSHO, that is :D )

The bass sounded fine though... it wasn't too "present" in the mix, so I couldn't tell if it was over-compressed or not.

oh crap.. I just realized that I wasn't even listening to the compressed like a grape version... geez... Well,.. the grape version produces some artifacts on my WMP, but I'm pretty sure that's just the new WMP (cause it royally sucks.. don't ever download Microsoft Beta software). I think the grape one is a little better. The drums don't stick oat so much... (still could use to take those cymbals down a bit.) There's still that high "sheen" on the cymbals... but over-all the grape version is better (minus the high-freq crackling.. which, once again, is prolly just my WMP)

CHAD: You should live closer. Seriously, it's a shame, really. I know exactly what you're talking about with the banjo...lol. I think there's a more prominet reason why you hear it "in your head." If you listen, closely...as you always do, over on the right, there's a capo'd acoustic doing an almost banjo-like run. I totally heard it in my head too. Yeah, Utah's nowhere for music...move here. LOL.

I take offense to that assumption! Donnie and Marie are one of the most underrated pair EVER!!!!

Chad is hearing what this Chad was also hearing... banjo or dobro... Maybe I'll whip out the banjo and play around with it.

About the new tune... kick ass!!! Takamine through a Roland JC120 fronted by a tube screamer? Damn!!! I"m getting a tube screamer!!! Anything else in the path?

Git -----> tubescreamer pedal ----> Roland JC. Took a lot of the lows out on the amp (thus, the thinner tone). Volume = 9.

Try it...it's fun. :D

Oh yeah, and before I forget...

THIS IS THE GREATEST BBS ON THE PLANET, AND I'M SO FREAKING GLAD TO BE ABLE TO SET THIS AS MY HOMEPAGE AGAIN, THAT I FEEL LIKE SHOUTING WITH BIG LETTERS!!!!

I didn't listen to the grape squashed version but wanted to second the comment about homrec being the best bbs on the planet.....and now it's fast! long live dragon.

as for the drums...you know they have that sound that a lot of v-drums have. it's the 'wow that sounds awsome' when it's all by itself but 'man that sounds like electric drums' when it mixes in with everything else.

I'm still trying to figure this problem out with my own stuff and coming closer and closer to just doing away with the kit and buying a real kit, real mics, preamps, etc. and facing the inevitable reality that computers are really good at a lot of things but not real good at reproducing the tone of a real instrument.

oh, and i just signed up for DSL so I'll be more active here in a couple of weeks.

You put it perfectly. When I listened to the drum tracks soloed, the kick sounded warm, the snare sounded real meaty, and the high hat even sounded kinda' "dirty," in a realistic way. Again, I don't think the sounds are THAT bad, but it's weird how it doesn't seem to translate once the drums are put back in the mix.

The JC120 cranked to 9? Damn... that's fucking loud. I've only cranked mine up all the once just to see how loud it would go and I've never been past 6 or 7 since. Hell, I rock the rafters and floor boards at 4 or 5! The kids are scared of it.

It's not a 120...It's a 55, but it still peels paint off the walls. The only reason I could turn it up that loud is because it was in a closet in a bathroom...(i.e., 2 closed doors b/w it and any human).

The beginning sounds like that song..."my baby loves the western movies" remember that one??? oh, well
I love that guitar sound, and as always the song content is top notch!!!
I thought I heard the drums breaking up a little bit, sounds like it was recorded hot.
You are still one of my favorites!!

WESTERN MOVIES

The Olympics - 1958

Good Call. If I'd thought of it, I could have just ripped the gunfire from that...it's got the ricochet and everything.

Thanks a lot for checking it out, man. Hope you stick around a little more, b/c the avatar just rules!!!
