But what the hell...

"AWAY"
www.nowhereradio.com/honestmango/singles

This is a little different.

(there are no electric guitars on this tune, b/c I had to do a short demo for my band, and this is how we play...so YES...the guits sound thin, and YES, there are WAAAAY to many FX on the vocals...that's how we sound...ie., like s**t) :D

Cool tune! (as per usual). I like the guitar sound-if anything its thick(not thin). Good vocal sound(is the delay a bit off? slow maybe??), do I hear some auto tune? I really liked the backups in the chorus-and the whisper at the end. The only thing I didn't care for was the drums(Jamal?)....IMO they're all over the place and don't really settle on the right groove till the very end when they do the military style beat-and they seem ahead of the beat-in general....Anyway, I liked this alot, listened to it a bunch. Good tune.

YES, I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT AUTOTUNE HAS MADE ITS WAY BACK TO MY COMPUTER. IT JUST FITS ON THIS SONG, AND I'M NEVER APOLOGIZING FOR IT. HELL, I MAY EVEN GET AN AUTOTUNER FOR MY AUTOTUNER.

:D

:D

hehehehe....Happy Thanksgiving Stratomaster. Thanks for listening. I won't comment about the drums, b/c they were done per an mp3 file, and it screwed up the timing a lot, and I think I screwed them up when I was trying to fix them, and there are noticeable pauses as a result of my "fixing," and they're being redone...so you can't blame *Jamal*...if he had anything to do with this...and I'm not saying he did. :D (But he did do all the backup vocals, because he's the coolest guy who never hangs around here anymore :D).

Thanks for giving it a shot.

Sounds like the drums got fixed till they were broke.:D The splice at 1:20 kind of slaps you in the face.
I REALLY like this tune (and AutoTune:D ) The guitar tone is very cool. The drums are in and out of sync and I guess that phasey sound I hear in them is MP3 disfigurement. This a very cool tune. I like the backing vocals. Very clever layout.

BAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahaha... Yeah, I'm a production genius. Man, have I mentioned that I absolutely HATE screwing around with drums. TrackRat - you're very generous with your time, and I appreciate it. I'm shocked at the guitar tone comments, frankly; I figured I'd really catch grief for those...(Takamine acoustic played through a Tubescreamer and a Roland Jazz Chorus played at stage volume). Good or bad, this is how we sound...in fact, I might leave the screwed up drums in ... they're more accurate. :D

Thanks, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Hey Chris,

I MAY EVEN GET AN AUTOTUNER FOR MY AUTOTUNER.

...........:D :D :D

Good demo man. The acoustics dont sound that bad....... lackin some sustain, but functional for the purpose, no? Ya gotta use what you can get your hands on when the idea's hot and fresh.

but those drums..... now........those drums ROCK! ......:D I especially like that ride/open hat (not sure which one it is). ....actually i do like the lead in drum riff at the beginning

......on to whats important. GREAT TUNE! Very nice song writing man...... this is gonna shine when you record it proper.
And, ......hey Jamal, where ever you are.......... nice bg's man:)

Nice tune Chris. You know Im into pop hooks so I dig it for sure.I need to pick up and autotune.I like the sound of it.The guitars have that matthew sweet/indie rock sound............cool man.Is your band gonna play this live?It would really kick performed with a tight band.Nice vocal melody as always.

Ok,it's time to let this turkey digest.;)

Wowwowow

Kool track Chris! Great writting as always. What are you using for distortion on the acoustic? I alway's wanted to over use effects like this, but didn't have the balls to let anyone hear it:D , thanks for sharing this!

Happy Freakin' Thanksgiving! :D
Doesn't sound like what I'm used to of yours. I like it though. The acoustics sound ok like that. How'd you distort them?
I like the song a lot. You need to speed that delay up just a little bit. The drums...............well....if you know there are skips and timing things caused by encoding then there's no point in pointing those out.
Hey......I like that cadence during the fadeout.........cool!

I thought it sounded great. I like the tune. The delay may be just a tad slow, but otherwise fine.

I liked the drums at the end. That is the snare sound I love.

Someone want to clue me in on how "Autotune" works? It's obvious from the name what it does. Where do you use it?

nice rythm you have going on here.
thats different putting that kinda distortion on acoustic.. but I say be creative and do whatever makes a different tone.
I wouldve guessed it was an electric guitar.. I couldnt tell, but the tone did sound different... not bad at all.
Nicely written and recorded!

WITH GUT FULL OF TURKEY

Man, not really what I expected, but very cool. I'm gonna' be even wordier than usual, because this one's a real experiment for me on a lot of levels.

And......hey Jamal, where ever you are.......... nice bg's man:)
Hey Guernica - Those backups were so freakin' cool when I got 'em, all I did was verb them...maybe some chorus. I've noticed that "autotune" starts getting out of hand when you use it on lead vox AND bg vox. He did 'em in about :15 minutes too. (BTW, your comment in Jaimee's thread about using them on backups is right on the money in my humble opinion. )

The drums - When Jamal originally took a run at 'em, he kinda' UNDERplayed, so I asked for "more fills." That fill at the beginning that you liked was actually his idea of a joke, but I dug it and kept it. The Honest Mango regular drummer is more of a "lead drummer" than a "pocket drummer," so it fits like this. He's just in a different city, and he has no interest in recording...so Jamal answered a call for help. The sync issues are a bitch on this one, because I've heard the tracks put together on his end, and they sound great. Something gets lost in the transfer...we're gonna' try a higher bitrate tomorrow I think.

THE GUITARS - I've collected a ridiculous number of guitars over the years, and I know the SG would have made a lot more sense on this tune, but it's not what I play live. The other guit player and I both play Takamine Acoustics, and for "gas," I just stomp on the Tubescreamer, so what you're hearing is how we play...right or wrong.

Man, Mike... you've gotta' be as sick of listening to me as I am. I was gonna' take a little break from recording, so of course, I go ahead and post 2 songs in one week. I just can't stop. I enjoy nothing more these days than making amateur recordings of mediocre songs. Anyway, I thank you.

Is your band gonna play this live?It would really kick performed with a tight band.
Hi there Kramer - This tune has been in the rotation for awhile as a kind of an intro number, but I've been making up words on the spot...so I finally wrote some. The idea is that when people show up and see our setup (acoustic drum kit with deer antlers on it - two Takamine acoustic guitars, and bass [not to mention the lead singer/guitar player who typically wears a stetson and a UT marching band uniform...lol...you'd have to know him]), they assume we're about to lay down 4 hours of Garth Brooks or something. "WHY ARE THESE CORNFEDS PLAYING [insert name of rock club] FOR CHRISTSSAKE???" Starting off with this tune, with the distorted ACOUSTIC guits and HUGE DUH-LAY on the vox, makes some people stay that wouldn't otherwise... I'm sure it makes some folks leave too. Anyway, I'm in a warm fuzzy place after hearing your comment on the "Pop Hook." That's very cool, b/c that's what it's supposed to be. :D You didn't call it country...probably b/c you're from the south, right? Cool. Sorry I made you read all this...must be the turkey buzz.

What are you using for distortion on the acoustic? I alway's wanted to over use effects like this, but didn't have the balls to let anyone hear it
Hey David - Thanks, man. I was at a garage sale about 5 years ago, and a little guitar pedal was sitting on the $2 table. It was an Ibanez Tubescreamer...the original. Somebody obviously died...lol. Anyway, I didn't try to negotiate the price, and it actually works. It's like the SM58 of guitar FX...It's had more beer spilled on it than a stripper at Mardi Gras, and it just keeps on working. SLuiCe gave me a tip about recording amps in a closet, so I did that. It's just my Takamine, into the TS, then into my amp (Roland Jazz Chorus..cool clean amp, but not known for ROCKING...but it's what I play through live, so that's what I recorded). The amp was cranked at stage volume, and even though it was behind 2 closed doors 15 ft. away, you can still hear the feedback. I hyped the mids on the amp when I recorded it. Oh yeah...mic'd it with the 58.

As for overusing FX, I know what you mean. Notice my disclaimer in the original post. I think a lot of people mistakenly equate HUGE effects with NO MUSICAL OR RECORDING ability...(although in my case, it may not be a mistake). Some of my favorite recordings have ridiculous amounts of FX...on gits and vocals. I love The EDGE (U2), and that S.O.B. absolutely DRIPS with FX. I'll bet if I HADN'T made the disclaimer, I'd be catching more grief for it. Anyway, you're a monster musician, so I'm stoked that you didn't scoff at the FX.

The acoustics sound ok like that. How'd you distort them?
Hey Lt. Bob, I'm not gonna' make you read this ridiculously long post...I'm gonna' paste in what I wrote about the gits... "It's just my Takamine [acoustic] into the [Ibanez Tubescreamer pedal], then into my amp (Roland Jazz Chorus..cool clean amp, but not known for ROCKING...but it's what I play through live, so that's what I recorded). The amp was cranked at stage volume and recorded with a 58" Jeez...I'm quoting MYSELF. Could I BE any more self-absorbed??? Anyway, thanks for the comments about the delay problem...I'm redoing it. Have you noticed a trend in my inability to hear rhythm problems? LOL... Thanks a ton for listening...please post a tune of you and your daughter's band.

Someone want to clue me in on how "Autotune" works? It's obvious from the name what it does. Where do you use it?
Hey Sennheiser - The way I use it is on my computer. It's just a little program that works on vocals or (less noticeably) on individual notes of instruments...like guitar solos. You tell it what key the song is supposed to be in, and it adjusts each note to the closest note in that key that the note is close to...(horrible sentence there...lol). The way I have been using it lately is a little more manual than auto, but I'm having fun with it. Anyway, it's what gives the vocal that unreal, warbly effect in places, like on Kid Rock's "Only God Knows Why." Thanks for listening.

_____________
EVERYBODY - WE ARE RE-DOING SOME OF THIS, SO I'D REALLY REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE SOME UPDATED FEEDBACK IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, I'M A HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS, AND I LOVE YOU ALL!!!! [definitely turkey buzz].

Now, if I could only PLAY the damned thing as well as you...then I'd have something. Thanks for checking it out.

cant say i love the guitar tone but the song totally rocks....i woulda went for a more acoustic tone.....amateur recording, yes - mediocre song, no way......

i like the way you use Autotune....very tasty.....

Lt. Bob, if you read this, please help Chris with his request for a clip of your daughters band.....suggestion - "she talks to angels".....ya'll rocked that song;)

This is a good tune man... and I wouldn't even have known they were acoustics if you hadn't pointed it out... This is definitely different for you, but good stuff all the same... sure, the drums need work... (ok.. so they need to be totally re-done :p) but the tune itself is good and the guitars don't sound too shabby....

and long live autotune... :D

WATYF

and I wouldn't even have known they were acoustics if you hadn't pointed it out...

Same here. I think the tone is just fine. Don't touch a thing.
If I'd have know you could do that to an acoustic guitar, I would have saved my money and not bought an electric.

I think you should crank the auto tune even higher, it still sounds a little like a vocal track, and I guess your looking for that synthesizer type vocal sound.. :)

I cant believe that I turned into one of those people who don't like *hearing* the auto tune.. I can almost say I'm starting to hate the sounds of that effect.. (Unless used by Cher) :D

Other than that, I like the tune a lot.. The drums sound very strange.. not the playing, but how they're mixed..

overall a good song, and the guitar sound is not as bad as I expected..

nice job..

Hey Senn...I appreciate that. Of course, this works better with the amp in a closet than it does with the amp 5 feet away from you on stage...SCREEEEEAAAAMING with feedback at every chance.

Gidge - It's probably my wimpy voice that makes you wanna' hear an acoustic... lol. I'm glad you liked the tune. I don't think I'm ever gonna' graduate out of the minor leagues when it comes to recording, but I have a lot of fun striking out. Thanks for the listen.

WATYF - Jamal started to send me another drum track last night, and I got 1/4 of it before his computer completely died... The last thing I saw him I.M. me was "I'm gonna' reboot." Haven't heard from him since, so I took what he sent me and tried to make some loops. Lemme' know if it's closer, b/c I apparently can't talk to him to get his opinion. (that's all code-speak for DON'T BLAME JAMAL IF THEY STILL SUCK). Thanks for the help.

B.SABBATH - Now that first line is CLASSIC. lmao. Yeah, by the end of the year, I'm hoping that my vocal can be reduced to nothing more than digital bubbles. I'm well on my way. Sam, if you read what I said to WATYF, my internet drummer's apparently out of commission...so I'd REALLY appreciate it if you would elaborate on the mix comment. I have one more day before this has to be in the mail, so rip it apart. I think my disdain for drums in general is pretty common knowledge, so you're not gonna' hurt my feelings. All I have is one track. The only panning I can do is like on tom rolls. Is it a level thing? Please help.

autotune for president!

echoing WATYF's comment about the guitars. i wouldn't have thought it was an acoustic. i actually like the tone....but i'm also not a guitarist so maybe i'm just easily fooled? they stood out to me right away, in a good way. sounds kinda like boston? anybody remember them? and you hard panned the beginning just to bug me right? actually, i thought it worked this time, i usually don't like that.

i like the song. you gotta knack for writing hooks in your music. this is no exception.

get rid of all the delay (cept the guitar stuff) and i think this would sound a lot better.

drums sound a little busy in places but that's a matter of opinion i think, the bass drum sounds real low and muddy.

Nice song, Chris!

I really dug the FX, all of them. Autotune is noticeable, but it sounds like a whole with the delay and other FX.

You got a great tone from that Takamine!

The only thing I didn't like was drums, sorta like the cymbals were like not decaying in a nice way.

But overall, great work.

Cheers
