After replying to the post about 50 beefin' with Nas, I thought about something.

Have any of you ever written and/or recorded a diss track. If so, to who and what was the reasoning behind it?

As for me, I wrote 2 diss tracks and recorded one of them. I wrote one on Ja and never recorded it. I think I was just bored and wanted to write something then. Ja ain't worth my time to diss, I just felt that he was slippin since he first came out and I lost respect for that.

The other one was a diss towards 3 local people back in Dallas (one of them was my ex-producer who did my first album). I did it because I got pissed off one day because I heard them diss me. I'm sittin' in my bedroom thinkin' "The hell they gonna diss me for when they broke bread with me only a week ago?" Come to find out, my ex-producer was mad that I was makin' my own beats and doing my own production so I didn't need him anymore for that and that cut into his cashflow.

Dude was makin' about $200 a month off me back in the day...and I made some beats for another dude that I dissed on the same song. He paid me $150 for the beat, but was getting them from my old producer for half that. Word got around. Ol' dude was thinkin' I was talkin' shit about him when I had no reason to....so he was on that diss song on me. Only way I found out about it was I was at his studio and he was actin' like nothin' was wrong and was playin' a beat that he was trying to show off and then that song was after it. He had went to the bathroom when it was on...so you know I had to confront him about it when I heard that.

The other cat I dissed was a producer who told me I'd never learn the shit (in my weak lyrical days). I was younger then so I took offense when I should have turned face and left it alone. I only dissed him because his boys tried to jump me at the club the next week. To my knowledge this guy never dissed me on wax.

I did the track over Makaveli's Hail Mary beat. Since I just wanted to get it off my chest, I never released it. I just called it Hail Mary 3, since the Aftermath version was already out.

I don't have the energy or concern to do another diss song. If I got somethin' to say to you, it won't be on wax.

haha...good thread...

i've done a few...

the first was to another underground south carolina MC named Dan Johns...but it was all in fun....just sparring practise basicallly.....i had just got back on the mic after a long hiatus...and he was a battle MC, and his former label head had been wanting to see us go at it...we real cool...and it was all peace...

i then got into it with a producer/mc, who had complimented my style...but who later started calling me wack...and offbeat and all kinda bullshit...poppin off...because i didnt really feel his beats... So i ended up dropping a DISS TRACK OVER HIS OWN BEAT...and i rode it better than the beat rode itself...lol...

then i entered a few online tournaments for money....some of them basically were shams, and the sites mysteriously shut down during the course of the tourney...

last one i entered was rapmusic.com....i had 3 tough opponents...made it to round 3 and lost to a cat named mac detroit...he was real dope...but i think i had the better verses...but i think some personal alliances and jealosy got in the way of me winning...Only tournament participants could vote...and i wasnt really in no clique...plus a dude sponsored him to enter the tourney...and sponsored another name...so he voted against me automatically....it was close tho.

then this other dude from Rapmusic...a cat named Cire had been hating on me since i got to the site...i brushed it off for like 2 years...then i got tired of everytime someone posted giving me props...cire came in hating talking about im overrated and shit...i called him out...and he wouldnt fuckin battle me...later when i was outta town for a minute and hadnt posted in awhile...he gonna call me out and shit...talking about put up 50 dollars paypal...and he cant wait to humilaite me....but he made it all conditional and shit...he called out two other dudes..like 1st one to respond he will battle...i respond days later...and he wont battle me....

so i said fuck it and i dropped a diss track...and murdered him...he still wont respond.......

anyway...ill post up links to the disses in a second

Not a good idea IMO

Ive never written a diss song, and generally I think doin so at this level is pointless...especially one aimed at another artist who hasnt made it yet. Where's the market for these records outside of the people in your camp? Most listeners wont know who you are talkin about, therefore how could they relate to it? Diss songs only work when both parties have a good rep and are selling records. Example: 50 tried that beef shit in the 90s ("How To Rob") before he got on good and it got him nowhere. I would just focus on making better music, which goes a lot further at winning fans over than a diss.

Adios Cire (I really hate this punk ass dude)

i think people want to hear drama...

diss songs draw substantially more attention than regular songs it seems...its sad but true...

i only do it for either competition...or to shut up someone who pops off mouth and i cant touch them on some real world shit... lol

I did it just to deal with it...which is why I never released it. Had I went there personally, it probably would have gotten uglier than it needed to be. As far as the Ja diss, I'll just label that boredom mixed with wanting to see if I could do it.

We do have a society full of drama kings and queens...I mean, why Lil' Flip and T.I. gotta battle? I think battlin' each other is kind of weak for those two, but outside of that I can listen to both of em.

Hova has spit some of his best lyrics when he's dissin' somebody. Big Pimpin' and songs like that are aiight, but they're not my speed though (shit if it gets you paid then that's what's up in the biz, and we all know women control mainstream now).

Now as far as competition goes, I can do that without a prob since there's really no beef goin' on. I take that like we're playin' dozens.

I Beg To Differ. When 50 Did How To Rob, The Streets Was On Fire. I Got Friends, For Instance, That Never Listen To Rap But Listen To That Song --- Even To This Day. !!!!

Diss Songs Are Risky! I Agree. But At The Same Time, When U R Working On Building Your Own Camp/buzz/local Base -- Diss Songs Can Actually Do A Great Deal 4 U - Depending On Who/how U Diss.

There's A Guy From Va Now Who Got Signed To Rap A Lot Records (or So The Rumor Mill Round Here Keeps Churning This Shit Out) After Doing A "diss" Song Where He Dissed Nearly Everyone In The Industry And There Is A Female Em Cee From Here As Well Who Has A Song Pretty Much Doin The Same Thing And She Is Gittin Mad Attention For The Song N The Video!!!

As Long As U Have The Capability To Market N Promote (at Least In Your Area) Diss Songs Can Do Great Things For Your Career. At The Same Time, I Know Of Some Cats That Were Dissing Some Of The Local Homegrown Rap Heroes From Round Here -- N The Local Hero Found Out About It N Shitted On Dudes -- Went To The Radio N Spit A Few Joints About The Dude N Told People Not To Support Him -- Then Caught Him In The Club And Called Them Out -- Murdered Dudes -- They Aint Been Heard From Since -- Alhtough Before He Jumped On Their Ass - People Was Really Startin To Talk About Th E Dudes Like "they Nice"
After He Got Blasted -- People Was Like "fuck Em"

The Problem -- Not Enough $ Market The Song Beyond The Corner -- That Radio Shit Killed Him!!!

-- ME? I HAVE WRITTEN A FEW DISS SONGS, BUT I HAVE ONLY RELEASED ONE -- A LONG TIME AGO. I WAS BASICALLY DISSIN CATS IN MY AREA FOR RELEASIN DUM ASS SONGS. BUT IN THE SONG, I SHOUTED OUT CATS THAT WAS PUTTIN OUT GOOD SHIT.
PROBLEM? RLEASE = ON MY MUSIC SITE N IN THE ONE STORE I HAD. I DIDNT HAVE SHOW CAPABILITIES AT THE TIME, SO THE SONG DID NOT GET "ANYWHERE" REALLY.
AFTER THAT I DECIDED, NO DISS SONG RELEASE TILL I GOT $ TO PUSH IT!!!! OTHERWISE, THERE IS NO POINT -- UNLESS OF COURSE IM DISSIN THE INDUSTRY -- PEOPLE LOVE THAT SHIT ROUND HERE

HELL, I DROPPED A FEW BARS ABOUT A COUPLE OF PEOPLE IN MY SONG - THIS IS FIRE

Example: 50 tried that beef shit in the 90s ("How To Rob") before he got on good and it got him nowhere.

I disagree; it spurned responses from Pun and Jigga. I don't know Pun's but Jay's response was
"I'm about a dollar,
What the f*ck is 50 Cent"
-It's Hot (Some Like It Hot)
Vol. 3: Life and Times of S. Carter

I've dissed on dude a few years back.. but I mostly diss the industry politricks and the labels perpetuating them. I might diss Ma$e soon though, cuz I know people who can put it in front of him and he needs to be put back into his place.

The industry's fair game, but if your lyrics ain't right you're gettin' seen as a hater. I'd probably write another diss song if it got personal but I think there's only a few things you could diss me on to make me go record it and let it leak through different sources...and I keep most of my personal biz private so it'd take a miracle to find out.

When i say it got him nowhere, i mean he didnt magically start sellin records after he started talkin shit...thats because he wasnt established to the point that he could REALLY be a threat to a Jay Z or Big Pun caliber rapper. Just like you pointed out what Jay said... basically "Who the f is this dude?" -- brushing it aside. It wasnt til he put out a hot single "Wanksta" -- (which he made in the 90s BTW) and got with Em and Dre that he developed a major following. (just being associated with them gave him the credibility he needed to be ABLE to diss Ja Rule) Let him have tried that shit under any other circumstances and we wouldnt even be talking about this right now. He dissed Ja to get fans...he dissed Jada and Joe to keep them. Has anyone else noticed the massarce sold HALF of what get rich or die tryin sold???? Plus he's over-saturating the market puttin out these BS soundtrack songs... "yous a window-shopper" cmon...WTF! I know Im sicka his ass right about now. But Ive digressed...

I Agree With Most Of What U Said -- Although 50 Had A Major Following Before He Got With Dre/em . .. . He Was The Mixtape King For Years!!! Official Mixtapes . . . Not His Man's Mixtape!!! He Was In Heavy Rotation On Mixtapes Waaaay Before He Got With Dre N Em . . . It Was The Mixtape Presence That Really Got Dre N Em's Attention -- N He Was Dissin Jah On The Mixtapes!!!

True...but when im referring to a major following, im talkin about people that never heard his mixtapes. Sure, the mixtapes may have gotten him the deal, but just the average listener/cd buyer -- the ones that were snatchin get rich or die tryin off the shelves (didnt that shit go DIAMOND???!!!)... I DONT think the mixtapes got him many of THEM. Mixtapes generate buzz, but its what you do on your own that makes or breaks you as an artist. Just look at Cassidy...INFAMOUS on mixtapes (and would eat 50), but only managed to go Gold.

Yeah, sometimes it's all about which label you run with. Shit, if I had that kinda dough, I'd have famous producers produce some of my shit just to say it was produced by them.
