last night i went and recorded some tracks at a friend of a friends' house. he had a decent setup - full rack of "name" effects processors, compressors, and equalizers. he also had a yamaha md-8. i have heard quite a bit about these little machines, but until last night, had never had the chance to use one. well, the tracks that we got down actually sounded decent. i mean, he made my guitar plunking and throat noises into some semblance of a song, which is always good : ) anyways (my point),the downer was that it took us about 4 hours to record 4 tracks: guitar, solo guit, vox, and br vox. the reason was that we would continually be getting "disc errors". i dunno how often this happens to you guys, but it got pretty damn annoying, esp. when i was actually singing on key, and had to punch in again in the middle of something. after each "disc error" he would take the md out and mumble "well, it LOOKS fine". i had to laugh, but really, i guess thats all you can say, right?? anyways, if you guys can offer any insight, that would be mega-cool. thanks

That disk you were using is probably defective somehow. Probably need to just get a new one.

Disc errors should not cause terrors

Yo McGyver:

You don't need to use your Swiss Army knife to fix a typical "disc error" on the MD-8.

The first time this happened to me I was using a very NEW disc. The MD-8 manual says to discard/THROW AWAY the disc that does this. Nay Nay Nay!!!

Dust is an enemy of the MD-8 as well as the data discs.

So, here is what to do; take your vacuum cleaner and with the gentle brush attachment vacuum the disc top and bottom and also carefully vacuum out the disc receiving tray of the MD-8.

I did this and, Voila....I'm still using that disc.

If the vacuum doesn't fix the problem, then, you could have a defective disc. But, I do believe that some of the Data discs come from the factory with DUST IN THEM.

Haven't had that problem with the two track discs yet; I only had the problem once with the Data disc.

This should save you a few bucks buying discs. Kindly pass this on to your friend with the MD-8.

Also, make sure the shiny metal slots on the disk are clean(clear of finger prints and smudges).

Yo Haslands:

Thanks. I try not leave my prints anywhere except on my favorite canary.

A messed up MD may not be the only cause of the error. I began to have the same problem with my MD8 a while ago. Everytime I would attempt to record, I would be peppered with Error messages. After a lot of communication with the folks at Yamaha, I ended up mailing the unit to CA for repairs. It turns out that the slot the MD sits in somehow got bent or knocked out of whack. The tech at Yamaha said this is kind of common and Mds need to be loaded and removed with the utmost caution.

In the end, it worked out...they gave me a totally new machine for the price of shipping even though the warranty had expired.

By the way, if you want to buy it, let me know...
