Dirty piano?

I have always been a giant fan of Blind Faith. All six songs.;)

Anyhow, there's this piano sound that Winwood gets that works just great in a rock setting - kinda round, and real dirty at higher volumes. It's in "Well All Right" and especially "Presence of the Lord". I think some of the rare piano tunes from Cream had the same sound.

Anyone know how this was achieved? I can kind of emulate it with the mdaPiano VSTi thru the B4's dirty Leslie simulator (motor off), but it doesn't quite ring true.

If you're going back to listen, Eric's in the left and Stevie's in the right, most if the time. Also, the guitar-through-a-dirty-Leslie sound that Eric's using seems to contribute to the perceived level of dirt in the piano - The piano's really pretty clean, but the distortion is definitely there.

Thanks.

2 1/2 weeks, 64 looks, no answers. Sigh.

There was a thread earlier about the piano on Lady Madonna, but this is a different sound.

Some of the Cream piano might had this sound, too - I think it was Pappalardi playing it then.

Anybody? Harvey? Anybody?

Seeing lady madonna sort of helped me figure out what you're talking about. I dont listen to Blind Faith, but I should (here comes the blasphemy: I think Clapton is a WAY over rated hack) anyway.

This may be like, kind of a "no shit sherlock!" answer but I have acheived a sound similar to the Lady Madonna sound buy applying lots of compression, badly, as an effect. Like a 4:1 ratio w/ pretty fast attack and slow release (to taste)

The other thing that has gotten some good results is reamping the piano tracks thru an amp and letting the gain kinda break it up real nice.

Hope this helps

Sorry bout your luck... sometimes stuff gets buried.

Try the FREE Izotope vinyl plugin. Google it for the page.

Just be aware that you'll need an effects envelope if you don't want the noise effects all throughout playback. Or turn the noise down and use the other settings.

PLAY!!

Rock on,
Pat

I've got vinyl - didn't occur to me to try it.

mdaPiano has a "compressed piano" preset, that's what I'm using pre-tube plug-in. But I could add some more compression myself.

BTW, I was NOT a giant Cream fan, but Blind Faith was great. Clapton about makes me gag, now, but his real early 70's stuff (pre-Ocean Blvd) was excellent. Duane kicked his ass big time in the Dominoes, though.

Thanks guys...
